KEYS TITLE BID ENDS IN POTOMAC

Frederick Falls 10-3 Dropping the Northern Division Championship Series in Four Games
September 12, 2010
The 2010 Frederick Keys season has come to an end as they fell to the Potomac Nationals, 10-3, in game four of the Northern Division Championship Series. Potomac jumped out to a four run lead after three innings and cruised to the victory. With the win, the Nationals advance to the Mills Cup Championship Series where they will play the Winston-Salem Dash starting on Monday night in Winston-Salem.

RHP Luis Noel started for the Keys and after a scoreless first inning, he allowed two runs in the second and two in third before being relieved by RHP Kenny Moreland with two out in the third. Noel allowed four earned runs on four hits over 2.2 innings. He walked three and struck out five on the night.

Trailing by four runs, Frederick got on the board in the top of the fourth. RF Ronnie Welty hit a solo homerun off of RHP Marcos Frias to make the score 4-1 Potomac. Welty hit .282 in the 2010 regular season with a team-best 18 homers and 82 RBI. He was the only Key named to both the midseason Carolina League All Star team as well as the Carolina League Postseason All Star team.

Potomac quickly erased the run scored the Keys as they countered with three runs in the bottom of the inning. C Derek Norris, DH Bill Rhinehart, and 1B Tyler Moore each had an RBI in the Nationals three run fourth.

The Keys tried to mount a comeback in the sixth but fell short. Ronnie Welty and 3B Billy Rowell led off the inning with walks and after a single by DH Miguel Abreu, 1B Tyler Townsend crushed a Carlos Martinez pitch off the leftfield wall. Welty and Rowell easily scored but Abreu was thrown out at home after the relay from SS Jose Lozada to C Derek Norris was right on target. Frederick would not score another run in the game as they fell to the Nats. Luis Noel got the loss for Frederick while Marcos Frias notched the victory.

Frederick finished up the regular season 72-68 and won the First Half Northern Division Championship by nine games. The winning season for the Keys in 2010 was just the third since 1994 that Frederick had a record over .500.

Frederick Keys baseball will return to Harry Grove Stadium in April of 2011. For all inquiries Keys related contact the Keys at 1-877-8-GO-KEYS.
