Launch Gameday
Chris Rahl blasted two home runs and Takashi Maruyama hurled five shutout innings as the West Oahu CaneFires closed out their Hawaii Winter Baseball season with a 4-0 victory over the visiting North Shore Honu.
The CaneFires finished the season with an 18-18 record, just a half game behind the West Division Champion Honu. North Shore will take on the East Division champion Waikiki BeachBoys in Wednesday's Championship Game.
Rahl, an Arizona Diamondbacks prospect who had hit just one home run in 77 HWB at-bats, went yard to lead off the second and fourth innings. Mike Stodolka (Kansas City Royals) capped the game's scoring with a two-run bomb that came with one out in the fourth.
Maruyama (2-2) scattered two hits and two walks while striking out three. The 20-year-old left-hander finished the season with a 1.15 ERA in 39 innings. Michael Dunn (New York Yankees) struck out three over two scoreless innings to pick up his first save.
North Shore's best scoring opportunity came in the seventh inning when Koby Clemens (Houston Astros) was hit by a pitch and Jonathan Tucker (Baltimore Orioles) reached on an error to put runners on first and third with two outs. After Tucker advanced to second on defensive indifference, Issei Nakamura grounded out to end the game.
Takuya Kikou (2-2) took the loss, allowing four runs on five hits over four innings. Los Angeles Dodgers farmhand Wesley Wright struck out four over two shutout innings in relief.
