Outfielder Shawon Dunston Jr. activated from DL
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AUGUST 30, 2015) - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, have activated outfielder Shawon Dunston Jr. from the 7-day disabled list on Sunday. In a corresponding roster move, outfielder Trey Martin was placed on the 7-day DL, retroactive to August 27. Dunston Jr. is active and will be in uniform for the Pelicans homestand finale Sunday night.
Dunston Jr., 22, returns from his second stint on the 7-day disabled list and has not been with the Pelicans since going down on June 28, missing 58 games. He made his first trip to the DL earlier this year on April 23 and was activated June 13, making two starts with the Pelicans before going back to the DL on June 28. He played five games with the AZL Cubs from July 7 to July 15 and two more on August 28 and 29. In those seven games, Dunston Jr., batted .350 (7-for-20) with two doubles, no triples, no homers, and two RBI along with one run scored. He walked three times and struck out three times, and on the basepaths, the speedy outfielder stole one base in one attempt during his rehab stint.
In 12 games with the Pelicans this year, Dunston, Jr., has gone 9-for-38 (.237) at the plate with one double, three triples, and no home runs as well as a walk and six strikeouts. A right-handed hitter, Dunston, Jr., has scored four times and driven in a pair of runs. He has been perfect on the basepaths with the Birds as well, swiping three bases in three attempts.
A native of Fremont, Calif., Dunston, Jr., was selected by the Cubs in the 11th round of the 2011 MLB June Amateur Draft out of Valley Christian High School in San Jose, Calif.
Martin, 22, came to the Pelicans when outfielder Jacob Hannemann was promoted to Double-A Tennessee on April 28. In 90 games with Myrtle Beach, Martin has hit .239 (73-for-306) from the right side of the plate, driving in 31 runs, doubling 13 times, collecting one triple and hitting a pair of home runs, as well as striking out 83 times and drawing 17 walks. He is second on the team in stolen bases with 14, having been caught four times.
Born in Atlanta, Georgia, the Cubs selected Martin in the 13th round of the 2011 First-Year Player Draft out of Brookwood High School in Snellville, Ga.
With the roster move, the Pelicans roster is at 25 active players, which is the Carolina League limit, and includes six players on the disabled list.
The Pelicans close out their final homestand of the regular season on Sunday against the Wilmington Blue Rocks. Gates open at 5:00 p.m. ET, and the first pitch from TicketReturn.Com Field at Ballpark is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. ET.
