Cardinals nail down series win with 4-2 victory in Tulsa
Tulsa, OK - The Springfield Cardinals guaranteed the series win with a 4-2 victory in the middle game against the Tulsa Drillers before 5,238 fans at ONEOK Field on Sunday night.
With the Cardinals win and an Arkansas Travelers loss, the Cards only trail the Travs by 3.0 games for 1st place in the North Division Second Half Standings. Both teams have eight games remaining in the regular season, including four head-to-head match-ups at Hammons Field this Tuesday - Friday.
Cardinals RHP Kurt Heyer and Drillers RHP Jeremy Kehrt exchanged a pair of scoreless innings to start tonight's game, but Tulsa (27-35, 57-74) struck with two runs in the bottom of the third. RF Jeremy Rathjen sparked the charge with a single, before moving to second on a sacrifice bunt. A base hit from 3B Brandon Trinkwon put runners at the corners, before an RBI single from SS Erisbel Arruebarrena cracked the scoreless tie. With runners at first and third, Arruebarrena took off for second on a pitch, drawing a throw from C Michael Ohlman and enabling Trinkwon to steal home for the 2-0 lead for Tulsa.
The Cardinals (29-33, 59-73) came back right away with two runs against RHP Jairo Heredia in the top of the fourth. RF Nick Martini started the inning with a screaming double to right field, before being joined on the bases when 2B Bruce Caldwell worked a walk one out later. Following a pop out, 3B Patrick Wisdom placed a two-out infield single to load the bases. SS Breyvic Valera and pinch-hitting INF Brett Wiley then worked a pair of RBI walks, forcing in the tying runs to even it at 2-2.
Following a scoreless bottom of the fourth from RHP Silfredo Garcia (W, 1-1), Springfield swung in front against LHP Grant Dayton (L, 0-2) in the fifth. With one away, Martini again got the rally going, this time with a walk. 1B Jonathan Rodriguez followed with a double to put runners at second and third. One out later, C Michael Ohlman came through with a two-out, two-run single through the left side, lifting the Cardinals into the 4-2 lead.
Garcia followed with two more scoreless stanzas, keeping the Cardinals in the two-run lead through his three-inning outing. RHP Robby Rowland followed with a pair of perfect innings, retiring six in a row in the seventh and eighth.
