HOSMER WINS CAROLINA LEAGUE BATTING CROWN

First Player in Club History to Win Batting Title
September 14, 2010
Wilmington, DE - Wilmington Blue Rocks first baseman Eric Hosmer was officially named the Carolina League batting champion over the weekend. It marks the first time in franchise history a Rock has been recognized as the league's top hitter.

Hosmer began the season with Wilmington and batted .354 in 87 games before being promoted to Double-A. He fell just short of the required number of at-bats needed to win the award, but is recognized as the winner based on the guidelines of Rule 10.22(a) which governs individual qualifications for league leadership in batting average, slugging percentage and on-base percentage.

The rule states that if a player falls short in the number of plate appearances required to be eligible for the award, outs can be simulated to get him to the necessary total. If he is still ahead of all competitors in the questioned category, he is deemed the champion.

Hosmer finished with an adjusted batting average of .351. The same rule cost Blue Crewer Clint Robinson a CL batting title in 2009. However, Robinson claimed the 2010 Texas League crown with a .335 average.

Hosmer also finished as the league leader in on-base percentage. He ended his tenure on the Riverfront with a .429 OBP courtesy of 44 walks and 115 hits. After the simulated outs his adjusted total was .426.

The Blue Rocks return to the field on April 8, 2011 as they open their season in Myrtle Beach, SC against the Pelicans. The full 2011 schedule will be announced later this off-season.
