Flashback: Texas League in June

December 6, 2006
June 1 -- Chris Iannetta bashed two home runs to power the Drillers to a 3-1 victory over San Antonio. Iannetta smacked a solo shot in the fifth inning and went deep for a two-run dinger in the seventh to account for all of Tulsa's offense.

June 2 -- Zack Greinke made his first Minor League appearance of the year and hurled five strong innings as Wichita defeated San Antonio, 7-1. Greinke, who abruptly left Spring Training for personal reasons, gave up one run on four hits with a walk and a strikeout.

June 4 -- Midland's Brant Colamarino hit for the cycle, but the RockHounds lost to Arkansas, 8-7. Colamarino doubled in the second inning, singled in the fourth and tripled in the sixth. He belted a solo homer with two outs in the ninth inning to tie the score. Arkansas' Aaron Peel ripped a one-out, walk-off homer to give the Travelers the victory.

June 5 -- Springfield's Rico Washington was named Offensive Player of the Week after batting .420 (11-for-26) with two homers, six doubles and seven RBIs. The 28-year-old's best game came against Midland, when he homered twice and drove in four runs.

June 5 -- Tulsa's Ubaldo Jimenez was named Pitcher of the Week. He went 2-0 with a 0.75 ERA in two starts, allowing one run on five hits with three walks and 13 strikeouts over 12 innings. His best outing came against San Antonio, when he struck out eight in six shutout innings.

June 6 -- Mitch Maier went 2-for-4 and drove in five runs as Wichita defeated Springfield, 11-4. Maier belted a two-run homer in the first inning, added a two-run single in the fifth and drew a bases-loaded walk in the sixth.

June 10 -- Terry Evans clubbed two homers and drove in seven runs to power Springfield to a 9-4 victory over Arkansas. Evans hit his first Double-A homer, a three-run shot in the sixth inning. His second dinger was a two-run blast in the seventh.

June 10 -- Brian Stavisky went 5-for-6 with four RBIs and five runs scored as Midland crushed Frisco, 18-2. Stavisky smacked a two-run homer in the sixth inning and delivered RBI singles in the fourth and fifth.

June 11 -- Future Hall of Famer Roger Clemens posted a Corpus Christi-record 11 strikeouts in six shutout innings during a tune-up start. He allowed two hits and did not walk a batter while throwing 73 pitches, picking up the win in the Hooks' 5-1 victory.

June 11 -- Frisco's Anthony Webster and Midland's Brant Colamarino both went 5-for-7 and fell a home run short of the cycle as the RoughRiders outlasted the RockHounds, 12-11, in 16 innings. Adam Morrissey drove in Kevin Mahar with the winning run.

June 12 -- Wichita's Mitch Maier was named Offensive Player of the Week after batting .458 (11-for-24) with two homers, nine RBIs and nine runs scored. He hit a tie-breaking homer in the ninth inning to give Wichita a victory over Tulsa.

June 12 -- Ubaldo Jimenez again was named Pitcher of the Week. He tossed a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts, retiring 12 straight batters in a 5-0 blanking of Arkansas.

June 13 -- San Antonio's Oswaldo Navarro had two hits and five RBIs in an 8-1 triumph over Corpus Christi. Navarro delivered a bases-loaded double in the second inning and added a two-run double in a five-run eighth.

June 13 -- Springfield's Mike Parisi set a franchise record by striking out 10 in seven innings as the Cardinals defeated Arkansas, 2-0. Parisi gave up two hits and two walks, breaking the strikeout mark he shared with Chris Lambert.

June 14 -- Ubaldo Jimenez pitched 5 1/3 hitless innings and became the Texas League's first eight-game winner as Tulsa blanked Wichita, 4-0. Dee Brown singled with one out in the sixth inning to break up the no-hit bid, but it was the only hit Jimenez surrendered in six frames. The right-hander fanned six and walked three.

June 14 -- Corpus Christi may have lost to San Antonio, 2-0, but the Hooks clinched the South Division first-half title when Midland defeated Frisco, 3-1. The RoughRiders' loss guaranteed the Hooks a playoff spot.

June 19 -- Frisco's Nate Gold was named Offensive Player of the Week after batting .462 (12-for-26) with three home runs and nine RBIs. He highlighted the week by going 3-for-4 with a walk-off homer in a 4-2 victory over Midland.

June 19 -- Corpus Christi's Matt Albers was named Pitcher of the Week. He went 2-0 with a 0.77 ERA in two starts, giving up four hits and one earned run in 11 2/3 innings with 15 strikeouts and six walks.

June 20 -- San Antonio's Wladimir Balentien needed a tiebreaker round but defeated Tulsa's Joe Koshansky to win the Texas League All-Star Game Home Run Derby. Balentien hit two homers and Koshansky slugged three in the six-man preliminary round. After neither player homered in the final, Koshansky also went homerless in the tiebreaker, while Balentien blasted a line drive over the left-field fence on the third pitch he saw.

June 20 -- Corpus Christi's Josh Anderson drove in the game's only run with a groundout in the third inning, giving the South Division a 1-0 victory over the North in the Texas League All-Star Game. Anderson, who also led off the game with a single, was named the "Star of Stars." Hooks teammate Juan Gutierrez started and pitched two perfect innings to earn the win, while Corpus Christi closer Jailen Peguero picked up the save. Anderson, Gutierrez and Peguero were three of a league-high nine Hooks on the roster.

June 22 -- Kurt Suzuki went 3-for-5 with a grand slam and eight RBIs as Midland outslugged Tulsa, 15-10. Suzuki's slam gave the RockHounds a 9-5 lead in the eighth inning, but the Drillers came back with four runs in the bottom of the frame. Suzuki added a three-run double to highlight a six-run ninth and finished a triple shy of a cycle.

June 22 -- Mitch Talbot broke Roger Clemens' recent Corpus Christi team record by striking out 12 over seven innings as the Hooks defeated Arkansas, 6-2. Talbot gave up two hits and a walk. He escaped trouble in the fifth after loading the bases with none out, striking out Gregory Porter and Devin Day before retiring Eric Rodland on a groundout.

June 22 -- Wladimir Balentien homered in his third consecutive game to power San Antonio to an 8-2 victory over Springfield. Balentien went 4-for-4 with three RBIs.

June 23 -- Marc Kaiser threw his second consecutive complete game as Tulsa shut down Midland, 6-1. Kaiser threw 91 pitches and allowed four hits while striking out five. The outing gave him a 0.84 ERA over 32 innings in his last four starts.

June 23 -- Hunter Pence hit a walk-off, two-run homer in the 12th inning to give Corpus Christi a 7-5 victory over Arkansas. Ben Zobrist singled with two outs and Pence followed with his 18th dinger of the season.

June 24 -- Jason Bourgeois had two hits and matched a career high with five RBIs as San Antonio defeated Springfield, 8-2. Bourgeois delivered a two-run single in the eighth after starting the day with an RBI double in the third and lifting a sacrifice fly in the fifth.

June 25 -- Ubaldo Jimenez allowed one hit and struck out 10 in five-plus innings as Tulsa blanked Midland, 3-0. Jimenez took a no-hitter into the fifth before Kevin Melillo led off with a single. Jimenez was lifted after walking the first two batters to open the sixth. The win was his sixth in six starts.

June 25 -- Wladimir Balentien drove in five runs to lead San Antonio to an 8-5 victory over Springfield. Balentien hit his fourth home run in six games when he connected for a grand slam in a five-run first inning.

June 26 -- Tulsa's Seth Smith was named Offensive Player of the Week after batting .500 (10-for-20) with a home run and six RBIs in four games. He had three multiple-hit games, including a 3-for-6, four-RBI performance in a 15-10 loss to Midland.

June 26 -- Tulsa's Marc Kaiser was named Pitcher of the Week after giving up one run on four hits in a 6-1 victory over Midland. The complete-game effort was his second in a row.

June 26 -- Jorge Cortes went 3-for-4 with two RBIs to extend his hitting streak to 22 games, matching the longest in the Minor Leagues to that date. He singled in the second inning to equal the streak by Brian Barton of the Class A Advanced Kinston Indians. Cortes added another single and a double and drove in two runs.

June 27 -- Ian Stewart smashed a walk-off home run to give Tulsa a 2-1 victory over Frisco. Stewart lined a pitch from Danny Touchet over the left-field fence as the Drillers won the fourth time in five games. The hit was Tulsa's third of the contest.

June 28 -- Ben Zobrist and Josh Anderson each stole two bases as Corpus Christi swiped six bags while being caught once in an 8-0 victory over Springfield. The two steals gave Anderson 21 on the season.

June 28 -- Nathan Haynes stole two bases and Arkansas swiped six bags without being caught in a 4-3 victory over San Antonio. Pinch-runner Dwaine Bacon stole second in the ninth inning and scored the tying run on Brandon Wood's double. Matthew Brown singled home Wood to put the Travelers in front.

June 28 -- Thomas Diamond registered a team-record 12 strikeouts in six innings as Frisco defeated Tulsa, 4-1. Diamond gave up one run on six hits and two walks. He claimed the league lead with 96 strikeouts in 75 1/3 innings.

June 30 -- Aaron Peel went 4-for-5 with a season-high five RBIs as Arkansas outslugged Tulsa, 14-7. Peel hit a two-run single to highlight a four-run third inning. He added an RBI double in the fourth and drove in two more runs with his 20th double of the season in the seventh.
