QUAKES ARE CAL LEAGUE CHAMPIONS

Rancho wins first crown since 1994, Bellinger MVP
September 20, 2015

San Jose, CA - The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes are California League Champions for the first time since 1994! Cody Bellinger had three extra-base hits and hit a back-breaking home run, as the Quakes shut out the San Jose Giants 5-0, earning a three-game sweep in the California League Championship Series on Saturday night at Municipal Stadium in San Jose.

Bellinger, who finished 3-for-5, drove in two and scored three runs and was named the series MVP, capping an incredible season for the 20-year old that also featured a mid-season All-Star appearance and a post-season nod as a Cal League All-Star.

Trevor Oaks was masterful, giving the Quakes exactly what they needed on the mound by working into the eighth inning. Oaks (1-0) allowed back-to-back hits with one out in the eighth and was replaced by Kyle Hooper, who immediately got Angel Villalona to line into an inning-ending double-play.

Hooper walked a one-out batter in the ninth, which forced Michael Johnson to enter the game. Johnson locked up the first Quakes' championship in 21 years by retiring the final two hitters, both via strikeout.

Alex Verdugo, who ended up driving in the game-winning runs in Friday's 4-3 win, drove in Bellinger on two different occasions, helping to give the Quakes a 2-0 advantage. Verdugo's double off San Jose starter Christian Jones (0-1) in the fifth put Rancho on the board at 1-0. In the sixth, Verdugo struck again, bringing in Bellinger with a run-scoring single for a 2-0 lead.

Bellinger gave the Quakes some breathing room in the eighth, blasting his third home run of the post-season with a two-run shot to right-center off Giants' reliever Ian Gardeck, as the Quakes built a 4-0 lead.

Jacob Scavuzzo gave Rancho their final run in the ninth, as he doubled home Spencer Navin for a 5-0 advantage.
