January 9, 2007
FORT MILL, S.C. - January 9, 2007 - The Charlotte Knights would like to congratulate former Charlotte O's shortstop Cal Ripken Jr. for his election to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Ripken received 537 votes (98.53 percent of the total vote), the third highest in balloting history done by veteran members of the Baseball Writers' Association of America, but the most for a position player.

Ripken played for the Charlotte O's during the 1979-80 seasons. He joined the Charlotte team near the end of the 1979 season, batting .180. The next year, Ripken turned things around by hitting 25 homers, 78 RBIs, with a .276 average. In doing so, he helped lead the O's to the Southern League Championship. He also didn't miss a game that season.

For his Charlotte baseball career, Ripken is tied for second in games played in a season with 144 and is ninth in runs scored in a season with 91 both during the 1980 season.
