Mancini Named Orioles Minor League Player of the Year
FREDERICK, Md. -The Frederick Keys are excited to announce that former first baseman, Trey Mancini, has been named the Orioles Minor League Player of the Year. Additionally, former Frederick pitchers Mychal Givens and Oliver Drake where named the organization's co-pitchers of the year, while Glynn Davis received the Elrod Hendricks Minor League Community Service Award. All four players will be recognized in an on-field ceremony before Friday's game against the New York Yankees.
Mancini, 23, the Brooks Robinson Minor League Player of the Year, hit a combined .341 with 21 home runs, 89 RBIs, 43 doubles and six triples over 136 games between Frederick and the Double-A Bowie Baysox. The former Notre Dame standout claimed the organizational Triple Crown, leading all farmhands in batting average, home runs and RBIs. Ending the season with Bowie, Mancini won the Eastern League batting title with an adjusted .330 (117-335) batting average.
Three times an Orioles Organizational Player of the Month (May, June and August) the first baseman was a USA Today Minor League Player of the Year finalist and was named to Baseball America's Minor League Second Team.
In 52 games with the Keys this season, Mancini hit .314 with eight home runs, 32 RBIs, 14 doubles and 28 runs scored. The Carolina League's Player of the Month for May, the Floridian led the CL in hits (65), extra-base hits (25), total bases (109), slugging percentage (.527) games played (52) and at-bats (207) at the time of his call-up to Double-A on June 4.
A member of the Keys bullpen last season, Givens, 25, the co-Jim Palmer Minor League Pitcher of the Year, went 4-2 with a 1.73 ERA and 15 saves in 35 games for Bowie. Named to Baseball America's Minor League First Team as well as the Eastern League's top reliever by the same publication, Givens made his Major League debut on June 24. With the Orioles this season, the right-hander is 2-0 with a 1.88 ERA in 21 games.
Drake, 28, made his big league debut on May 23, while also turning in an outstanding season for the Triple-A Norfolk Tides. In 42 games, he went 1-2 with a 0.82 ERA (44 IP/4ER) and finished 23-for-23 in save opportunities. Posting the most saves among Orioles farmhands, Drake turned in a 26-game scoreless streak (26 IP) from April 27-August 6. Rated as the top reliever in the International League by Baseball America, the right-hander was also an International Mid-Season and Post-Season All-Star. With Baltimore he is 0-0 with a 3.07 ERA in 12 games.
Davis, 23, spent parts of four seasons with the Keys (2011-14) and receives the Elrod Hendricks Award for excellence in community service. With Bowie, Davis made numerous appearances throughout the community, visiting medical centers while also taking part in youth baseball camps and hitting and fielding clinics.
On Friday, Keys Head Groundskeeper, Mike Soper, will also be honored prior to the Orioles game for being named the Carolina League Sports Turf Manager of the Year. Orioles Head Groundskeeper, Nicole McFadyen will present Soper with his award.
The Frederick Keys kickoff their 2016 campaign on Thursday, April 7 against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans on the Grand Strand. Planning is already underway for next season, while a tentative schedule complete with game times is available at frederickkeys.com.
