Commo Wins First Warner Fusselle Award
BURLINGTON, VT--- Vermont Lake Monsters radio broadcaster George Commo has been named the winner of the inaugural Warner Fusselle Award for Radio Excellence, given to the best New York-Penn League broadcaster as determined on overall production quality, knowledge/preparedness and presentation of the game by a league committee, the Short Season Single-A affiliate of the Oakland Athletics is proud to announce today.
A native of Burlington, Commo has won numerous broadcast awards over his historical career. He is a member of both the Vermont Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame as well as the Vermont Principal's Association Hall of Fame. Commo is a ten-time winner of the National Sportscasters Association Vermont Sportscaster of the Year Award.
Commo has been involved with the Vermont Lake Monsters since the team's inception in 1994 (then Vermont Expos) and has been the primary play-by-play announcer for 15 of the franchise's 22 years, including each of the last three seasons on 960 AM "The Zone".
"This is a great honor for George and the Lake Monsters are very proud to have him call our games," said Lake Monsters General Manager Joe Doud. "George's experience and expertise in the press box is unparalleled in the state, and we couldn't think of someone more deserving to be the first winner of the Warner Fusselle Award."
Warner Fusselle, famous for his Southern accent, was a long-time announcer for several Minor League Baseball teams, most recently the Brooklyn Cyclones of the New York Penn League from 2001 until his death in 2012. He also could be heard on the 'This Week in Baseball' and ESPN's 'Baseball Magazine' television shows.
"It is a tremedous honor to be selected for the Warner Fusselle Award, as there are many talented broadcasters in the New York-Penn League," said Commo. "I have greatly enjoyed working with the Lake Monsters. I knew Warner well during this time with Brooklyn, so it is humbling to be honored in his memory".
The Warner Fusselle Award for Radio Excellence will be presented to the Vermont Lake Monsters in Nashville, Tennessee this December at the Baseball Winter Meetings.
