Reports: Martinez signs with Cubs
An already great week for the Cubs has gotten even better.
Cuban outfield prospect Eddy Julio Martinez has signed with the Cubs, according to multiple reports. MLB.com's Jesse Sanchez first reported the news.
As a result of signing, Martinez will receive a $3 million bonus from Chicago. He reportedly was close to a $2.5 million deal with the Giants last weekend before backing out. Unlike Cuban stars such as Jose Abreu and Rusney Castillo who signed multi-year Major League contracts inn recent years, Martinez is considered an amateur, so his signing fell under international free agent rules.
The 20-year-old center fielder is ranked as the No. 4 international free agent by MLB.com behind Cuban pitchers Yadier Alvarez and Vladimir Gutierrez and Cuban outfielder Yusniel Diaz. As of Friday, Alvarez was the only other player in that group to have signed after inking a deal with the Dodgers in July that included a $16 million bonus.
Martinez, who bats from the right side, received above-average 60 grades on his hit, power, arm and fielding tools from MLB.com and earned a 70 for his run tool, making him a potentially special five-tool star in center field. In its assessment of the 6-foot-2, 195-pound outfielder, MLB.com compared him to a "young Andruw Jones." He became eligible to sign after leaving Cuba in November and taking up residency in Haiti two months later. He has since trained in the Dominican Republic, according to Sanchez.
