Top 15 of '15: Jake Peavy Faces Chihuahuas

October 13, 2015

A former National League Cy Young Award winner pitched at Southwest University Park on June 11, 2015. Jake Peavy, who won the 2007 NL Cy Young Award with San Diego, joined Sacramento while on the San Francisco Giants disabled list with a back injury.

Peavy is one of the best major league pitchers of his generation, leading the NL in strikeouts twice, being named to three all-star teams, winning a Gold Glove Award and earning two World Series rings (Boston in 2013 and San Francisco in 2014).

Peavy gave sparkling compliments to Southwest University Park in a pregame interview and signed autographs for El Pasoans after the game.

The Chihuahuas performed well against Peavy that night, collecting seven hits and four earned runs in his 4.1 inning start. Rymer Liriano went 3-for-5, with all three of his hits coming against Peavy.

After an active first six innings on both sides tied the score 6-6, the offenses slowed down late, with only three combined runs crossing in the final three innings.

The Chihuahuas went ahead 9-6 in a three-run seventh inning rally that included three hits, a walk, a costly Sacramento throwing error and an RBI sacrifice bunt by Rocky Gale. Relievers Cory Mazzoni and Marcos Mateo held the El Paso lead in the final frames.

A sellout crowd, an El Paso victory and a Cy Young Award winner on the mound made this #13 on our 2015 countdown.

The Chihuahuas 2016 home season starts on Friday, April 15th against Reno. Season Seats and Paw-tial Plans are available now by calling (915) 533-BASE!
