Tigers' Jones suspended, won't finish AFL

NEW YORK -- Tigers shortstop prospect JaCoby Jones was suspended for 50 games Thursday and will miss the remainder of the Arizona Fall League.

The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball said Detroit's No. 10 prospect received a 50-game suspension without pay after a second positive test for a drug of abuse in violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

Jones, who had been playing for the Scottsdale Scorpions of the Arizona Fall League, will miss the remainder of the season as his suspension is effective immediately. He'll serve the remainder of the punishment at the start of the 2016 Minor League season.

The 23-year-old infielder hit .257 with 16 homers, 25 doubles, 80 RBIs and 25 stolen bases in 133 games between Class A Advanced Bradenton and Double-A Erie this past season. He was Pittsburgh's third-round pick in 2013, but was traded to Detroit on July 30 in exchange for right-handed reliever Joakim Soria.

With Scottsdale, the LSU product was batting .280 with two homers and four RBIs in 50 at-bats in 12 games. He went 0-for-4 on Wednesday and was initially in the Scorpions' lineup Thursday morning, but was lifted before first pitch.

Players are typically issued a warning following a first positive test for a drug of abuse and a suspension for a second offense. Substances considered "drugs of abuse" by Major League Baseball include cocaine, marijuana, heroin, LSD, ecstasy and other opiates.

Major League Baseball has issued 94 suspensions to 92 players this year for violations of the Minor League drug program.
