Gillaspie Homers Twice in Scottsdale Win

Third baseman a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate
October 29, 2010
Conor Gillaspie had a breakout performance on Thursday afternoon against the Surprise Rafters, going 4-for-4 with a pair of home runs, as Scottsdale Scorpions notched a 9-5 win.

Gillaspie, appearing in his 11th game with the Scottsdale, had his finest performance of the Arizona Fall League season. The 23-year-old's day started with a single into right field as part of a three-run second inning for the Scorpions. The Wichita State product led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a homer to right giving Scottsdale a 5-4 advantage. After singling to center in the bottom of the sixth, Gillapsie hit the second of back-to-back home runs to cap a four-run eighth inning and the Scorpions win.

Entering the contest, Gillapsie was 5-for-35 (.143) at the plate with just one extra-base hit.

Charlie Culberson, owner of a 10-game hit streak, and Brandon Belt each had the day off.

Scottsdale's win coupled with Mesa's 6-4 loss to the Peoria Javelinas moved the Scorpions back into a first-place tie with the Solar Sox. The two clubs will square off Friday night at 8:35 ET as left-hander Ryan Verdugo (1-1, 3.38) gets the start for Scottsdale.

The Scottsdale Scorpions roster consists of players from the Giants, Arizona Diamondbacks, Baltimore Orioles, Colorado Rockies, and Washington Nationals organizations. Daily updates from Scottsdale's games will appear on SquirrelsBaseball.com.
