Royals Sign Chien-Ming Wang To MiLB Deal
The Royals announced on Thursday the addition of former New York Yankees right-hander Chien-Ming Wang, who was signed by the club to a minor league contract.
Wang is best known for winning 19 games in consecutive seasons with the "Bronx Bombers" during the 2006-07 campaigns, with those 38 victories the most of any Major League pitcher in that time span. The Taiwan native finished second in the American League Cy Young voting in 2006 behind then Minnesota Twins southpaw Johan Santana.
In total over his eight Big League seasons, Wang has compiled a 62-34 record and 4.37 ERA (385 ER/792.1 IP) between the Yankees (2005-09), Washington Nationals (2011-12) and Toronto Blue Jays (2013). His 62 career wins rank first among all Taiwanese pitchers who have played in the Major Leagues, with lefty Wei-Yin Chen (46) currently ranking second among that group.
He began the 2015 season with the Atlanta Braves' Triple-A club, the Gwinnett Braves, before being released after making 11 appearances (ten starts). The Seattle Mariners then signed Wang to a minor league contract following a three-start stint Southern Maryland Blue Crabs of the independent Atlantic League, with him finishing the year with the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers. In total over his 11 Pacific Coast League outings (ten starts), Wang posted a 4-5 mark and 5.69 ERA (43 ER/68.0 IP), adding 23 punchouts.
