Rosenfield named to Virginia Sports Hall of Fame
The Virginia Sports Hall of Fame today announced its class of 2016, and longtime Tides General Manager DAVE ROSENFIELD has been selected for the honor. The class of 2016 was announced at the Virginia State Capitol in Richmond, as chosen by the statewide Honors Court committee.
Rosenfield first came to the Tides in 1962 and served as the General Manager of the club from 1963 - 2011. He was then named the Executive Vice President and Senior Advisor to the President following the 2011 season. He is a four-time International League Executive of the Year and won the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues' top honor, the John H. Johnson President's Trophy, in 1993. He also accepted the Baseball America Triple-A Bob Freitas Award on behalf of the Tides in 1994, and 2016 will be his 40th-consecutive year as vice president of the International League.
He was inducted into the International League Hall of Fame in 2008, joining former manager Frank Verdi as the first members of the Tides organization to ever receive the honor. Rosenfield was also named the "King of Baseball" at the Baseball Winter Meetings in Anaheim, CA in December of 2004. The "King of Baseball" is a long-standing tradition in which Minor League Baseball salutes a veteran from the world of professional baseball for long-time dedication and service to the game.
Rosenfield has had a varied presence in the Norfolk area's pro sports scene. He has served as the GM of the Norfolk Neptunes (Continental Football League), was the interim GM of the Virginia Squires (American Basketball Association), and served as the GM of the Tidewater Sharks hockey club. He was a member of the inaugural class of the Hampton Roads Sports Hall of Fame, which opened in 2008.
Rosenfield has also broadcast Tides games throughout his tenure with the Tides. He joined the radio crew full time in 2013, serving as a broadcaster for all Norfolk home games.
Joining Rosenfield in the class of 2016 are James Farrior, Rich Murray, Charles Oakley, Marianne Stanley, Charlie Stukes and Robert Ukrop.
The 45th annual induction banquet will take place on Saturday, April 30 at the Renaissance Portsmouth-Norfolk Waterfront Hotel in Portsmouth, VA as the headline event of Hall of Fame weekend. Tickets are now on sale. For more information, call (757) 393-8031 or visit www.vshfm.com.
