Stingrays Sign Former RiverDog Justin Milo
CHARLESTON, SC - It's not very often when Lowcountry fans have the opportunity to see an individual play for two different local teams in two different professional sports. This is one of those unique opportunities for both baseball and hockey enthusiasts.
Justin Milo, a Charleston RiverDogs outfielder during the 2010 season, has signed a professional hockey contract with the South Carolina Stingrays.
The announcement was made by Head Coach/Director of Hockey Operations Cail MacLean. In keeping with the Stingrays' policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
Milo, 23, joins the Stingrays after appearing in two games with the Alaska Aces of the ECHL where he recorded one assist. In three games so far, the Edina, Minn. native has posted one assist.
Currently in his first professional season, Milo spent two years at the University of Vermont alongside current Stingrays defenseman Patrick Cullity, netting 47 points (21 goals and 26 assists) in 59 games. Before attending Vermont, Milo spent his freshman season at Cornell University, where he lit the lamp three times and added an assist for four points in 24 games.
In addition to hockey, the athletic Milo also showed a penchant for baseball, hitting a combined .351 over three collegiate seasons (one with Cornell, two with Vermont), while slugging 14 home runs with 91 RBI.
Drafted in the 37th round of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft by the New York Yankees, the 5-foot-8, 180-pound left fielder appeared in 16 games with the RiverDogs this past season, where he batted .231 with four RBI and eight runs scored.
During the 2009 campaign,
Milo split time with the Staten Island Yankees (New York-Penn League) and the
GCL Yankees (Gulf Coast League) where he competed in 32 games and hit .256 with
six doubles, two home runs and 15 RBI.
