The California League, which will be celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, has named the first class of Hall of Fame inductees. Former Modesto Reds outfielder Reggie Jackson ('66) and former Modesto A's outfielder Rickey Henderson ('77) are among the first class of 15 inductees. Each current organization had the opportunity to select one player to represent their franchise in the California League Hall of Fame. In addition, a league-wide vote added four additional members to the initial Hall of Fame class.
The 15th and final member of the inaugural class will be selected by an online fan vote conducted by the California League. Ten finalists (one from each franchise) will be eligible to win the fan vote. The Modesto nominee is former Modesto Colt .45s infielder and Hall of Famer Joe Morgan.
Reggie Jackson was a member of arguably the greatest California League team ever assembled. The 1966 Modesto Reds had two future Hall of Famers (Jackson and relief pitcher Rollie Fingers) in addition to Major League All-Star Joe Rudi, future Hall of Fame manager Tony LaRussa and catcher Dave Duncan. Jackson, known as Mr. October, was inducted into Cooperstown in 1993. His Major League career included 4 World Series championship and 563 career home runs.
Rickey Henderson posted a .345 batting average with 95 stolen bases and 120 runs scored for the Modesto Athletics. Henderson was a first ballot selection to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2009. He holds the major league career records for runs scored and stolen bases. Henderson also finished with Major League baseball career with 3,055 hits.
