Tony Beasley to Manage Senators in 2011
Tony has spent the past three seasons working on the Pittsburgh Pirates major league coaching staff. He has been the Pirates third base coach, base running instructor and the hitting-bunting coach for the pitchers. Prior to rejoining the Pirates organization in November 2007, he was the Nationals third base coach in 2006 for manager Frank Robinson.
Beasley brings an outstanding managerial record to Harrisburg. He spent five years as a manager in the Pirates organization and his teams made the playoffs in all five seasons, three times taking them to the Championship Series. He managed the Hickory Crawdads to the South Atlantic League Championship in 2002. He was the 2004 Baseball America Double-A Manager of the Year with Altoona and was the 2002 & 2003 Baseball America Low Class-A Manager of the Year with Hickory. In 2004, he was a coach for the United States in the Futures Game and was the manager of the Mesa Desert Dogs of the Arizona Fall League. His overall managerial record is 372-258 for a .590 winning percentage.
Beasley was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 19th round of the 1989 draft before being traded by the Orioles to the Pittsburgh Pirates in September, 1991. He spent nine years playing professionally in the Orioles and Pirates organizations. He became a player coach in 1998 and then retired as a player to become a full-time coach in the Pirates organization in 1999. As a player, he was a 1990 and 1991 Carolina League All-Star and a 1996 Southern League All-Star. He batted .260 in 859 minor league games with 22 HR and 243 RBI. He and pitching coach Randy Tomlin were Liberty University teammates in 1988.
Tomlin returns for a third consecutive season as the Senators pitching coach. He gained notoriety last season with helping to develop Stephen Strasburg and Drew Storen. The popular Tomlin spent parts of the 1989 and 1990 seasons pitching for the Senators before being promoted to Buffalo and then onto Pittsburgh. He was 11-8 in 24 appearances with Harrisburg. He also spent parts of five seasons pitching in the big leagues with the Pittsburgh Pirates going 30-31 in his career. His best season came for the 1992 Eastern Division Champion Pirates when he went 14-9 during the regular season with a 3.44 ERA. Prior to being in the Nationals organization the past four seasons, Tomlin was the pitching coach for Liberty University for nine years. Randy and his wife Janet have three children and make their home in Lynchburg, VA.
Gingrich returns to the Senators as the hitting coach for a fourth consecutive season. He has helped develop current Nats hitters Ian Desmond, Danny Espinosa and Roger Bernadina. Gingrich played with the Senators for parts of the 2001, 2002, and 2003 seasons appearing in 34 total games. Troy retired as a player during spring training 2004. Since retiring, Gingrich has spent the past five seasons as a coach in the Nationals organization. He was Vermont's hitting coach in 2004 and Potomac's for three seasons, 2005-2007. During the off-season Gingrich resides in San Diego with his wife Lauren and twin boys.
