Former Emerald Brad Chalk Picked Up by Pittsburgh in Rule 5 Draft
Originally selected by the San Diego Padres in the second round of the 2007 first-year player draft out of Clemson University, Chalk played only 22 games with the Emeralds. While with Eugene, he .229 with two doubles, two triples and six RBI; he also racked up 22 strikeouts.
Chalk went on to move up through the Padres farm system. In 2010, he started with the Lake Elsinore Storm (High-A), batting only .191. After a stint in San Antonio with the Missions (Double-A) he landed with the Portland Beavers (Triple-A) posting a .313 average.
In the Major League phase of the Rule 5 Draft, players left unprotected may be selected for $50,000. The selection rules provide that the player must remain on the drafting team's 25-man Major League roster during the following season or be offered back to the original club for $25,000.
