Padres Trade Four Players for SS Bartlett

December 17, 2010
LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. - Reports indicate that the Padres and Rays finally came to an agreement on a trade that would send Jason Bartlett, and a player to be named later, to the Padres in exchange for RHP Adam Russell and three former Storm, LHP Cesar Ramos, RHP Brandon Gomes and IF Cole Figueroa.

Jason Bartlett, who was initially drafted by the Padres in 2001, will fill a much needed middle infield position at SS. With the recent acquisition of 2B Orlando Hudson, the Padres have filled two major vacancies after losing veteran infielders David Eckstein and Miguel Tejada.

Bartlett played in 75 games for Lake Elsinore in 2002 batting .250 with 14 doubles, four triples, one home run, 33 RBI and 24 stolen bases. The former Oklahoma Sooner was then traded to the Minnesota Twins for outfielder Brian Buchanan. Bartlett made his Major League debut, with Minnesota, in August of 2004 and spent the next three seasons with the club. After his four seasons with the Twins, Bartlett was traded, with Eduardo Morlan, to Tampa Bay for Matt Garza, Delmon Young, Brendan Harris and Jason Pridie.

Bartlett is a career .281 batter with 242 RBI, 129 doubles, 100 stolen bases, 29 home runs and 23 triples. His best offensive season was in 2009 when he set career highs in batting average(.320), RBI(66), home runs(14), doubles(29), triples(7) and stolen bases(30).

Of the four players that the Padres dealt to the Rays, three of them are former Storm.(LHP Cesar Ramos, RHP Brandon Gomes, 2B Cole Figueroa)

Ramos pitched in 26 games, including 24 starts for the Storm in 2006, where he went 7-8 with a 3.70 ERA. Ramos rejoined the Storm briefly in 2009 and went 1-0 with a 1.00 ERA in two games including one start.

In 2008, Gomes pitched in 22 games for the Storm compiling a 2-1 record with 2.89 ERA and 36 strikeouts in 28 innings pitched. Over four Minor League seasons, Gomes is 19-10 with a 2.99 ERA and 394 strikeouts in 295 innings of work.

Figueroa spent part of the 2009 season and all of the 2010 season with Lake Elsinore batting .303 with 66 RBI, 25 doubles and 24 stolen bases. The 2010 Storm MVP was one of six Storm to be named to the mid-season Class-A All-Star Game in late June 2010.
