Storm Gearing Up for 11th Annual Reading Program

January 5, 2011
LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. - The Lake Elsinore Storm are gearing up for their 11th annual Reading for Rewards Program. The reading program, which also promotes Going Green, encourages kids to read 10 books before April 1 and earn two free tickets to a Storm home game this season. As part of the program, the Storm and their lovable mascot, Thunder, will visit local schools to educate the students about Thunder's eight kid-friendly tips to Going Green.

The 2011 reading program, presented by Wells Fargo, is scheduled to begin on January 21 with the first assembly at Mead Valley Elementary in Perris. "We are excited to begin another season with our reading program," said Assistant General Manager Tracy Kessman. "Our team is very proud to be an advocate of reading and going green for the kids in our community."

Last season, Thunder traveled to 57 schools, performed at 100 assemblies, distributed 18,000 bookmarks and delivered 40,000 books titled Go Thunder Green: Thunder's Guide to Going Green.

Once students complete reading their ten books, they have to fill out the bookmark, which can also be found in the back of the Go Thunder Green book. Teachers will later return the bookmarks to the Storm for two free tickets to one of the following games: Sunday April 10 - 2:05pm / Friday, April 22 - 7:05pm / Sunday, May 8 - 2:05pm / Wednesday, May 18 - 6:05pm / Sunday, May 22 - 2:05pm.

Thunder's book was produced, written and illustrated by members of the Storm front office staff at the end of the 2008 baseball season. The book contains a five stanza introduction revealing Thunder's efforts to help the world by "Going Green" as well as a poem that details Thunder's eight tips to help our environment.
