AquaSox in the Off-Season

Throughout the off-season, the AquaSox will be checking in with some of your favorite players from the AquaSox. Check back weekly for updates on more members of the 2010 Northwest League Champions!

Everett, WA - Throughout the off-season, the AquaSox will be catching up with some of your favorite former players. This week, 2010 AquaSox outfielder, and Mariners' selection for short-season player of the year, Kevin Rivers checks in after finishing his degree at Franklin Pierce University in the fall, and explains his deep-rooted fear of birds.

Signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Mariners in 2009, Rivers caught fire with the AquaSox in 2010, hitting .332 with 13 double and 48 RBI. Rivers was also named NWL player of the week twice during the 2010 season, and hit .433 with 8 RBI in his last 10 game, propelling the AquaSox to their first NWL championship in 25 years.

AquaSox: What are you up to in the off-season?
Kevin Rivers: Not a whole lot. I went back to Franklin Pierce for the fall and graduated. Now I am just catching up on missed time with my family and friends. Also, I just started swinging the other day and have been running and lifting since I've gotten back from school.

AquaSox: Do you have an off-season job?
Kevin: No job for this guy, just getting in the gym and getting to the cages as much as I can.

AquaSox: What is your daily routine like in the off-season compared to during the season?
Kevin: My daily routine while I'm at home is waking up around 8:30 having some breakfast then head to the gym at 9:30. Usually get home between 11:30 and 12 have some lunch then play some video games until it's time to head to the cages at 4. Come home, have dinner with the family then see where the night takes me. Then wake up and do it all over again. During the season my day involved a lot of resting up from long nights and bus trips and preparing for the game.

AquaSox: What did you miss most when you were away during the season?
Kevin: Mainly just being able to be around my family and friends all the time. Being that far away and on different time schedules it was tough.

AquaSox: What non-baseball activities do you enjoy in your spare time?
Kevin: I got a Xbox for Christmas, so I have been playing that a lot lately.

AquaSox: How is baseball going for you? When do you head back to Peoria?
Kevin: Baseball is going really well right now, it feels good to start hitting and throwing again and getting ready for this upcoming season. I head back for spring training March 11, and I'm excited for this upcoming season.

AquaSox: What are your goals for 2011?
Kevin: Continue winning championships. I've won 2 in 2 years of pro ball, going 3 for 3 would be pretty sweet.

AquaSox: What is your plan post-baseball?
Kevin: Post-baseball I hope to become a college baseball coach at a major university or open up my own facility somewhere.

AquaSox: If you weren't a baseball player, what would your career be?
Kevin: I can't pick just one. I have many talents so my options are endless.

AquaSox: What's your New Years resolution?
Kevin: My New Years resolution was to not do anymore interviews with Katie Crawford, but that one ended very quickly. Other than that I don't really make New Years resolutions.

AquaSox: What are you most scared of?
Kevin: Deathly afraid of birds. When I was in kindergarten my class went on a field trip to Indian Rock Nature Center and I was chased around the farm by a turkey and eventually bit. And then at a zoo I was chased by a peacock. So needless to say birds are not my favorite.

AquaSox: What did you enjoy about your time in Everett?
Kevin: The fans and the ballpark atmosphere during home games.

AquaSox: Do you keep in touch with any of your AquaSox teammates?
Kevin: I've talked to Kevin Mailloux a couple of times, he's been real busy doing whatever it is Canadians do. I've talked to Chris Kessinger and Fred Bello a couple times also.

Favorite Restaurant in Everett: Besides the delicious peanut butter and jelly sandwiches at the clubhouse, I would have to say the Teriyaki place across the street from the stadium (Teriyaki & Wok).
