Scrappy's Scholars Reading Club Kicks Off At Schools

January 13, 2011
The Mahoning Valley Scrappers kicked off the all new, Scrappy's Scholars Reading Club, presented by Home Savings, this month. Scrappy visited participating schools to get them excited about the new reading program. Students all across the Mahoning Valley were thrilled as members of the Scrappers front office performed a skit to Casey at the Bat, a popular children's book.

Scrappy's Scholars Reading Club assembly participating schools include:

• Southington Local Elementary • North Road Intermediate (Howland) • St. Patrick's (Hubbard) • Roosevelt Elementary (Hubbard) • Baker Elementary (Mathews) • Westhill Elementary (Sharon, PA) • Woodside Elementary (Austintown) • Newton Falls Elementary • Rhodes Elementary (Niles) • Jackson Elementary (Niles) • Jefferson Elementary (Warren) • HC Mines (Howland) • Bristolville Elementary • Artman Elementary (Hermitage, PA)

Scrappy's Scholars Reading Program promotes reading outside of school with a special incentive for the students. As a part of Scrappy's Scholars Reading Club, each student is given a bookmark. These bookmarks are used to keep track of the books that the students read. Once a student reads ten books, he/she will have the teacher sign the bookmark. Then, the student can bring the bookmark to a game during the season and receive a free ticket! The experience goes even further, as the participating students will be able to go down on the field with Scrappy before the game that day. Plus, the class in each district that reads the most books will get to have a pizza party.

It's not too late for your school to get involved with Scrappy's Scholars Reading Club! If interested, please contact the Scrappers at 330-505-0000. Also, please visit our Facebook page to see pictures from our Reading Club assemblies.
