Hassey Returns To Manage Hammerheads
New Look Staff Includes Former Hammerhead Frank Moore
Ron Hassey will return to manage the Jupiter Hammerheads for a second season, the Florida Marlins announced this afternoon.
Hassey's return brings continuity to what will otherwise be a new staff for the Hammerheads, including hitting coach Frank Moore, pitching coach Terry Abbott and athletic trainer Julio Hernandez.
A catcher during his playing days, Hassey remains the only player in Major League history to catch two perfect games (Len Barker in 1981 and Dennis Martinez in 1991), and was with the Oakland Athletics during their run of three straight World Series appearances from 1988-1990. He spent six years as a Major League coach, including stints as the bench coach for St. Louis Cardinals and Seattle Mariners, and seven years with the Arizona Diamondbacks, serving first as a Special Assistant to the GM during the team's expansion and formative years, then spending time as a catching instructor, field coordinator, and scout.
New hitting coach Frank Moore will likely see some familiar faces this season, after spending the last two years as the hitting coach for the Short Season Class-A Jamestown Jammers. Last year, Moore's Jammers averaged 5.36 runs per game, third-best in the New York-Penn League. Drafted in 1998 by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Moore's minor league career included three years with Marlins affiliates, including stints with the Hammerheads in 2005 and 2006.
Pitching coach Terry Abbott will restart a coaching career that has already spanned more than a decade. After getting his start as a pitching coach in the Pirates' system in 1989, Abbott spent the 1990s coaching at a variety of levels in the Cincinnati Reds organization, moving on to be a scouting supervisor with the Reds from 2001-2004.
Also joining the staff in 2011 will be athletic trainer Julio Hernandez. Hernandez has spent his career in the Marlins organization, starting as the trainer for the Gulf Coast League Marlins in 2007 and joining Jupiter after two seasons with Class-A Greensboro. He earned the University of South Florida's Athletic Trainer of the Year award in 2005, the same year that he graduated from that university.
