White Sox put Thompson in Intimidators driver's seat

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (January 20, 2011) - The Kannapolis Intimidators, the Class 'A' affiliate of the Chicago White Sox, have a new manager in the driver's seat. Tommy Thompson, who served as a coaching assistant for the White Sox minor league affiliates last season, takes over as manager of the Intimidators for the 2011 season.

Thompson, 53, got his start as a manager in the White Sox farm system in 1990 as skipper of the Utica Blue Sox of the New York-Penn League and led the Midwest League's South Bend White Sox the following season. In 2007, his first season at the helm of the Frederick Keys, Carolina League affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, Thompson led his team to a league championship. After leaving the Keys in 2008, he managed the Windy City ThunderBolts of the independent Frontier League before returning to the White Sox organization last season.

The Atlanta Braves drafted Thompson in 1979 out of the University of Oklahoma, utilizing his versatility as a corner infielder and catching prospect for seven seasons before joining the Chicago White Sox in 1986. He played three seasons for White Sox Triple-A affiliates in Buffalo (1986), Hawaii (1987), and Vancouver (1988) before retiring.

Thompson will be joined in Kannapolis this season by pitching coach Jose Bautista, who is in his fourth year with the White Sox. The Latin Roving Instructor the past two seasons, Bautista spent 2001-08 as a pitching coach in the minor league systems of the Royal and White Sox.

Hitting coach Robert Sasser,is entering his sixth season as a coach in the White Sox organization, spending the last three years at Class-A Winston-Salem in the same role. Trainer Scott Johnson is coming to Kannapolis in his 23rd year with the White Sox, and Strength and Conditioning coach Jeremie Imbus returns for his second year with the Intimidators.

The Kannapolis Intimidators open the 2011 season on the road against the defending South Atlantic League champion Lakewood BlueClaws on Thursday, April 7.
