Baysox Bid Farewell to Matt Parrott
After 13 years as Head Groundskeeper and Director of Field and Facility Operations in Bowie, Matt Parrott is taking his leave from the Baysox. Parrott has accepted a new position with the Charlotte Knights (AAA affiliate of the Chicago White Sox) after overseeing the grounds at Prince George's Stadium since 2003.
During his tenure with the Baysox, Parrott was named the Eastern League Diamond Pro Sports Field Manager of the Year three times (2011, 2014, 2015). In 2011, he was also named the STMA (Sports Turf Managers Association) Double-A Sports Turf Manager of the Year. Following the 2014 and 2015 seasons, Parrott was recognized by the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards for his accomplishments.
Under Parrott's supervision, Prince George's Stadium has played host to numerous concerts and special events. Some highlights include two appearances by the USA Softball Women's National Team, concerts starring Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson and more, the 2004 Eastern League All-Star Game, a Laila Ali boxing match, celebrity softball games, TNA Wrestling events, cricket matches and more.
Parrott has developed an impressive groundskeeper tree of former assistants during his time overseeing the Baysox Operations Department. After working with Parrott, former assistants have moved on to jobs with the Baltimore Orioles, San Diego Padres, Duke University and many other prestigious organizations.
The North Carolina native oversaw a full field replacement prior to the 2011 season and a major replacement of the stadium seating bowl, in addition to a number of other improvement projects throughout Prince George's Stadium.
"The Baysox are losing a good friend and valuable co-worker," said Baysox General Manager Brian Shallcross. "We are in the business of promoting people up the ladder…from players to front office employees. In our case, we were fortunate to keep someone as talented as Matt for so many years. We know Matt, Christy, and their two daughters will find Charlotte to be a welcoming home."
