Perez, Royals Agree To 5-Year Extension

2011-12 Storm Chasers backstop's deal with Royals extends to 2021
March 1, 2016

The Kansas City Royals and former Storm Chasers catcher Salvador Perez have agreed to a five-year contract extension, as announced by the Royals on Tuesday. The deal keeps Perez under contract through the 2021 campaign.

The 2015 World Series Most Valuable Player has earned three American League All-Star nods so far through his five-year Major League career, in addition to Gold Glove honors in each of the past three seasons. In 545 career contests with the Royals, Perez has tallied a .279 batting average (569-2042) with 215 runs, 102 doubles, seven triples, 65 homers and 279 RBI.

Perez played a total of 24 contests with Omaha between the 2011 and 2012 seasons, combining for a .337 mark (33-98), adding 16 runs, seven doubles, one homer and 17 RBI. The backstop was promoted from the Storm Chasers during the club's inaugural 2011 campaign and made his Major League debut on August 10, 2011 versus the Tampa Bay Rays.

Perez's best game in a Storm Chasers uniform came in the second game of his 2012 season on June 8 at Werner Park against the Round Rock Express as he was recovering from injury. The catcher recorded five hits in as many at bats, scoring four runs while driving in an RBI as part of an 11-5 victory over the Rangers' Triple-A affiliate.

In other former Storm Chasers transactions news, 2014-15 Storm Chasers hurler Aaron Brooks last week was acquired by the Chicago Cubs from the Oakland Athletics in a trade that sent OF Chris Coghlan to Oakland. In 43 career appearances (40 starts) in an Omaha uniform, Brooks combined for an 18-8 record and 3.81 ERA (91 ER/225.1 IP), adding 195 strikeouts.

Among Storm Chasers hurlers to have pitched in the Werner Park era (since 2011), Brooks ranks third in innings pitched, tied for third in wins and seventh in punchouts. Brooks is also known in Storm Chasers lore for firing a complete game shutout for Omaha to give the club their third Pacific Coast League Championship over a four-year span.
