Live from New Hampshire, it's ESPN
ESPN's Stuart Scott and crew were on hand at New Hampshire's new Fisher Cats Stadium on Monday night as they hosted SportsCenter live from the game. The Fisher Cats were proud to represent the image of New Hampshire sports as part of ESPN's "50 States in 50 Days" program.
"Everybody watches SportsCenter, there's a personal connection there for everyone. This is an opportunity for every state to say 'For one day, Sportcenter is focused on our state and we can show off our love of sports,' " Scott said. "It's a great program -- lots of fun."
Fans were just as excited as they showed up to the ballpark donning signs quoting some of Scott's favorite catch phrases. They gathered in the left-field picnic area, which was transformed into a set for the show.
The "50 States in 50 Days" concept kicked off on Sunday night with a live broadcast from Fenway Park in Massachusetts before heading to Manchester, N.H., home of the Fisher Cats, Double-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays.
Scott said that his favorite part of the program is knowing that it's a two-way learning process.
"This is the first time I've ever been in New Hampshire, and it's been cool sitting there and just learning little nuggets here and there -- that's the stuff you don't find in the travel guides," Scott explained. "Fans also get a chance to see how our operation works while we learn about the uniqueness of their state."
Perhaps Scott was interested that the Fisher Cats are the defending Eastern League champions. This season is also their first playing in their new stadium.
"It's time for us to represent New Hampshire and its sports fans," said Fisher Cats media director John Zah. "The Fisher Cats are honored to be chosen, and we are going to put our best foot forward so that the rest of America sees how lucky we are to have the type of sports fans we have in New Hampshire."
Despite the wet weather Monday, crowds gathered to get autographs and take pictures with Scott. Of course, they also lined up to get autographs from their favorite Cats as well.
So what was Scott's first impression of the Fisher Cats' organization?
"It's cool," he said. "I'm from the South so anyplace that has great barbecue is a plus in my book. And I got to throw out the first pitch -- it's the first time that I've ever thrown out the first pitch anywhere so that meant a lot."
The Fisher Cats have given their fans much to be proud of in the past two seasons, and they are quite confident that things will get better as time goes on. For now, fans can choose to celebrate their new ballpark, gaze at their championship trophy, and now even talk about the time SportsCenter shot live from a game.
