Darryl Strawberry to Meet Fans on April 19
(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) - Eight-time National League All-Star Darryl Strawberry will meet fans and sign free autographs at BB&T Ballpark on Tuesday, April 19 when the Charlotte Knights host the Norfolk Tides (Triple-A Affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles) in a 7:05 p.m. game. Strawberry, a member of the New York Mets Hall of Fame, played for the Tidewater Tides in 1983 when they were the Triple-A affiliate of the Mets. "Straw" made his major league debut on May 6, 1983 and earned National League Rookie of the Year honors later that year.
Gates will open at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 19 and fans will have an opportunity to meet the four-time World Series champion during the team's opening homestand of the 2016 season. Tuesday's tilt is the first of 11 Twitter Tuesday games, presented by BB&T. Once again this year, all fans will have a chance to win prizes during every Tuesday home game by interacting with the Knights on Twitter @KnightsBaseball. The first 3,000 fans through the gates on April 19 will also receive a BB&T Ballpark Scoreboard Desktop Clock, courtesy of BB&T.
A native of Los Angeles, CA, Strawberry was drafted first overall in the 1980 draft by the Mets out of Crenshaw High School (CA). From 1983 to 1990, the California native hit 252 home runs with the team and was consistently among the National League leaders in a number of offensive categories. He led the NL in home runs in 1988 with 39 -- his second consecutive season with that total. Over the course of his 17-year major league career, Strawberry hit .259 with 335 home runs and 1,000 RBIs. He won two Silver Slugger Awards (1988 and 1990) over that span.
The Knights will welcome an array of former Major League Baseball All-Stars to the ballpark during the team's 2016 All-Star season. Seven-time All-Star Rollie Fingers (May 18), 1972 American League All-Star Lou Piniella (June 1), and three-time National League All-Star Javy Lopez (August 17) will all meet fans and sign autographs this season at BB&T Ballpark.
The Charlotte Knights return home to BB&T Ballpark for their 2016 home opener on Thursday, April 14. The team's third Opening Night in BB&T Ballpark history kicks off with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch in Uptown Charlotte.
