Urias dominant early in Cactus League debut

Dodgers teenager struggles in second inning after striking out the side
March 11, 2016

For nine pitches, the 13,071 fans at Camelback Ranch in Glendale, Arizona, caught a glimpse of the Dodgers' future. Over the next few, they saw a talented teenager who's still figuring things out.

Making his first Cactus League appearance, second-ranked Dodgers prospect Julio Urias struck out the first three batters he faced before giving up three runs on three hits and a walk in the eighth inning of an 8-4 loss to the Angels.

Urias (0-1) blew through Geovany Soto, Gregorio Petit and Todd Cunningham after replacing veteran right-hander Pedro Baez to begin the seventh.

"He's a young kid and there were a lot of people out there," said Dodgers catcher Jack Murphy, who was behind the plate for both of Urias' innings. "He went out there and blew guys away in that first inning. That was awesome, kind of a preview of what he's capable of doing."

The performance was reminiscent of Urias' time last season at Double-A Tulsa, where he put up a 2.77 ERA while striking out 74 batters and walking only 15 over 68 1/3 frames. However, the eighth more closely resembled his two-start stint at Triple-A Oklahoma City at the end of the year, during which the Mexican southpaw surrendered nine runs over 4 1/3 innings.

Using an aggressive approach, the Angels pounced on Urias. Jefry Marte singled, David Fletcher doubled him home and Nick Buss tripled -- all on the first pitches of their at-bats. A four-pitch walk to Rafael Ortega followed, after which Dodgers manager Dave Roberts lifted Urias in favor of Louis Coleman.

"I mean, he was really jacked up that first inning. The ball was really jumping out of his hand," Murphy said. "I'd say he kind of exhausted a lot of his resources that first inning because he was so pumped up. And then, coming back out there, I think he was just having trouble getting the ball down in the zone. That's the only difference between success and giving up some hits is whether you're up or down in the zone.

"We all thought he threw the ball great though."

The 19-year-old was tagged with the loss as the Angels scored five runs over the last two innings to erase a 4-3 deficit. His batterymate was confident that fans will be seeing more of the seventh-inning Urias than the eighth.

"He's used to starting, so I think his routine is a little thrown off, but that's part of camp," Murphy said. "He'll adjust to that. He understands what it takes to be successful."

Corey Seager, MLB.com's top overall prospect, singled and flied out for Los Angeles before being removed with a sore left knee. Dodgers No. 12 prospect Austin Barnes went 2-for-3 and homered for the second time in three days.

Top Rangers prospect Joey Gallo bashed a three-run homer off veteran right-hander Matt Garza in the second inning to help Texas defeat the Brewers, 8-5. The blast was Gallo's first of the spring, although it left Garza less than impressed. "He's got a good swing, you know?" Garza told MLB.com. "But if I see him again, I'll break his bat. I'm not worried about it. He's a big boy. He hit the hell out of a high fastball on 2-0 [count]. So, next time, I'll get him." Brewers top prospect Orlando Arcia went hitless in two at-bats.
