Dodgers' Seager sidelined by knee injury

Top overall prospect expected to be out a week or two with sprain
March 12, 2016

About the only thing that can slow Corey Seager's ascension to the Major Leagues is an injury.

MLB.com's No. 1 overall prospect was diagnosed with a left knee sprain after undergoing a MRI, the Dodgers announced Saturday.

Seager injured the knee Friday night rounding first base after singling in the first inning in a Cactus League contest against the Padres. First-year manager Dave Roberts said the knee "just gave out."

"He wanted to stay in there for another at-bat [when he flied out], but we want to dig a little deeper because of where he felt it," Roberts told MLB.com.

Coming off a season in which he batted .293/.344/.487 in 125 games between Double-A Tulsa and Triple-A Oklahoma City, Seager enters 2016 listed first on the Dodgers' depth chart at shortstop. The 21-year-old is expected to be sidelined a week or two.

"It's nothing long term," Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman told MLB.com. "As soon as he's asymptomatic, he'll be back -- a week or two. There's no tear, there's no surgery, nothing more than treating and waiting until he's asymptomatic and getting him back on the field. He was still feeling sore, but after we checked and we're confident it's nothing that will linger long term."

Seager is 3-for-13 with one extra-base hit in five Cactus League contests.
