Yanks assign Mateo, Judge to Minors camp
Major League clubs continue to trim their rosters by reassigning prospects to Minor League camp. Some notable cuts made Sunday:
Yankees
Top two prospects Jorge Mateo and Aaron Judge were among 17 total players reassigned to Minor League camp or optioned as part of the team's first wave of roster cuts.
The pair participated in nine Grapefruit League games apiece with varying degrees of success. Mateo finished 3-for-15 (.200) with a home run, a triple, two runs scored and one stolen base in two attempts. Judge ended his Grapefruit League stint with one hit in 14 at-bats, a three-run homer on March 5, a game in which Mateo also went deep.
"Does the game slow down for them, or does it speed up because you've got big leaguers on your right, big leaguers on your left?" Yankees manager Joe Girardi told MLB.com. "Are they trying to do too much? So far, I've been really impressed with our young kids."
Mateo was signed by the Yankees as an international free agent in 2010. The 20-year-old native of the Dominican Republic led the Minors in steals last season with 82 between Class A Charleston and Class A Advanced Tampa, while hitting .278 with two home runs, 40 RBIs and 11 triples. He is currently ranked as MLB.com's No. 30 overall prospect.
Judge, MLB.com's No. 31 overall prospect, batted .255 with 20 home runs and 72 RBIs between Double-A Trenton and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in 2015. The first-round pick out of Fresno State University in 2013 has slugged 37 homers in two Minor League seasons.
They'll will be joined at Minor League camp by 2015 first-round pick and top pitching prospect James Kaprielian. The right-hander surrendered four runs -- two earned -- on four hits and two walks while fanning three over 3 2/3 innings in two Grapefruit League appearances.
Outfielder Dustin Fowler (No. 6), infielder Tyler Wade (No. 8) and left-hander Brady Lail (No. 19) were also reassigned, while No. 11 prospect Jacob Lindgren was optioned to the RailRiders.
Indians
Bradley Zimmer, Clint Frazier and Bobby Bradley, the club's top three prospects, were headed to Minor League camp after solid Cactus League campaigns.
Zimmer, MLB.com's No. 26 prospect, went 4-for-8 with a home run and three RBIs in six Cactus League appearances. No. 27 Frazier was 2-for-9 with a homer and three RBIs over five games.
No. 93 Bradley led the Class A Midwest League in home runs (27) and RBIs (92) in 2015. The 19-year-old collected two hits -- both singles -- in five Cactus League at-bats.
The trio will be joined by 18th-ranked Mike Papi, No. 20 Luke Wakamatsu and No. 22 Tyler Krieger.
Giants
Christian Arroyo, MLB.com's No. 82 overall prospect, was among 19 players assigned to Minor League camp, despite hitting .538 (7-for-13) with a homer, double and four RBIs in 11 Cactus League games.
"He's been impressive," manager Bruce Bochy told MLB.com. "To have a swing like his coming out of A-ball -- the kid can hit."
Joining Arroyo in Minor League camp were pitchers Tyler Beede (No. 2 prospect), Sam Coonrod (No. 8) and Chase Johnson (No. 15) and catcher Aramis Garcia (No. 9).
Athletics
Fourth-ranked prospect Richie Martin, the A's 2015 first-round pick, was sent to Minor League camp. In addition, Renato Nunez (No. 5) and Rangel Ravelo (No. 12) were optioned to Triple-A Nashville and Raul Alcantara (No. 16) to Double-A Midland.
Martin spent last season with Class A Short Season Vermont, where he batted .237/.353/.342 over 51 games and stole seven bases in 14 tries. The 21-year-old went hitless in three at-bats this spring.
Nunez, a 21-year-old third baseman, smacked 18 homers and drove in 61 runs in 93 regular-season games for the RockHounds and represented the A's at the 2015 Futures Game. Ravelo, acquired from the White Sox in December 2014 as part of the Jeff Samardzija deal, was limited to 59 games between Midland, Nashville and the Rookie-level Arizona League. The 2010 sixth-round pick hit .304/.377/.439 with three homers and 42 RBIs.
Mariners
Left-handed pitcher Paul Fry and shortstop Tyler Smith were reassigned to Minor League camp. They are ranked No. 24 and 25, respectively, among the Mariners' Top 30 prospects.
Fry posted a career-low 2.03 ERA over 50 appearances and converted nine of 16 save opportunities between Class A Advanced Bakersfield and Double-A Jackson. Smith hit .271/.361/.354 over 121 games for Jackson.
