Nimmo, Snell, Guerrieri reassigned to Minors
The Rays and Mets reassigned some of their top prospects at Spring Training on Tuesday, with Tampa Bay left-hander Blake Snell and Mets infielders Dominic Smith and Gavin Cecchini among a group headed to Minor League camp.
The Rays said they optioned Snell, right-handers Jacob Faria and Taylor Guerrieri and infielder Ryan Brett to the Minors, while the Mets sent Cecchini, sidelined 2011 first-round pick Brandon Nimmo and Smith, their No. 2 prospect, to Minor League camp.
New York also reassigned right-handers Stolmy Pimentel, Gabriel Ynoa, Robert Gsellman, Seth Lugo and Jeff Walters, lefties Duane Below and Josh Smoker, first baseman Marc Krauss and outfielder Travis Taijeron, according to ESPN.com. Second baseman Dilson Herrera left the team to play in a World Baseball Classic qualifying tournament in Panama but is expected back in Port St. Lucie within a few days.
Snell, 23, was 0-1 with a 5.79 ERA in three Spring Training outings, allowing three runs on seven hits and four walks over 4 2/3 innings. The 2015 Southern League All-Star won a MiLBY as the best starting pitcher in the Minors last season and also was selected to the Futures Game.
Faria, 22, was sharp in three relief appearances, striking out seven and holding opponents to a solo homer over 5 1/3 innings this spring.
Smith, 20, went 4-for-23 with an RBI and a walk in 10 Spring Training games for the Mets after getting just two at-bats over the last two years. He was voted MVP of the Mets' Class A Advanced affiliate last summer after hitting .305 with six home runs, 79 RBIs and 33 doubles in 118 games.
Nimmo was limited this spring after tearing a tendon in his left foot ahead of camp. He did not appear in a game.
Cecchini had two hits in seven at-bats this spring, making appearances in five contests. He hit .317 with seven homers and 51 RBIs in 109 Double-A games with Binghamton.
Padres
Manuel Margot, San Diego's top prospect and No. 45 overall, was optioned to Triple-A El Paso following the Padres' 11-1 loss to the Cubs on Tuesday.
"We're very pleased with what he's done, very excited about his development, very excited for the future," manager Andy Green told MLB.com. "It's not time for him yet. The time will come for him though, and I think we all see that now."
Last week, the outfielder voiced gratitude for the opportunity to be in big league camp, saying, "I'm really proud of all of the opportunities the Padres have afforded me. You know that when you switch organizations sometimes things don't necessarily go well or you're not necessary comfortable, but thankfully everything here has been great."
Red Sox
Righty Pat Light, who ranks No. 15 in the Boston system, and outfielder Bryce Brentz, who slots in at No. 30, were each assigned to Triple-A Pawtucket. Light went 3-5 with a 3.88 ERA over 47 relief appearances between the Eastern League and the International League last year. A broken thumb limited Brentz to 59 games for the Paw Sox.
The organization's No. 20 prospect -- left-hander Williams Jerez -- was sent to Double-A Portland. He climbed three levels last year, starting in the South Atlantic League and reaching the Eastern League while putting together a 5-3 record and a 2.54 ERA over 41 relief appearances.
White Sox
Chicago's No. 6 prospect, Jordan Guerrero, was sent to Minor League camp. The southpaw went 13-4 with a 3.08 ERA over 25 starts across Class A Kannapolis and Class A Advanced Winston-Salem in 2015.
Brandon Brennan, who's ranked No. 20 in the system, was assigned to Triple-A Charlotte. The 24-year-old righty was 3-4 with a 3.55 ERA over 12 games for Winston-Salem last season.
Angels
Third-ranked Angels prospect Nate Smith was reassigned to Minor League camp. The 24-year-old left-hander went 10-8 with a 3.86 ERA across 24 starts between Double-A Northwest Arkansas and Triple-A Salt Lake City in 2015.
Marlins
Miami reassigned its 10th-ranked prospect, J.T. Riddle, to Minor League camp. Last year, the left-handed hitting shortstop slashed .283/.323/.368 over 45 games in the Class A Advanced Florida State League, 44 in the Double-A Southern League and one in the Triple-A Pacific Coast League.
