Flynn & Alexander Optioned To Omaha

Southpaw relievers optioned, Morin, Coleman & Calixte to MiLB camp
March 23, 2016

The Kansas City Royals on Wednesday announced a series of roster moves affecting several Storm Chasers alums, which included optioning left-handed relievers Scott Alexander and Brian Flynn to Omaha, while also assigning catcher Parker Morin and infielders Dusty Coleman and Orlando Calixte to minor league camp. In addition, right-hander Ross Ohlendorf was granted release from his minor league contract.

Alexander spent the majority of the 2015 campaign with the Storm Chasers as one of the best relievers in the Pacific Coast League, tallying a 2-3 record and 2.56 ERA (18 ER/63.1 IP) in 41 appearances. The lefty paced the club with 14 saves while also leading all PCL relief pitchers in batting average against (.209) and baserunners per nine innings (9.38), and was named the Omaha Pitcher of the Year for 2015.

A sixth round selection by the Royals in the 2010 MLB Draft, the 26-year-old was promoted to Kansas City at the end of the 2015 campaign and made his Major League debut on September 2 versus the Detroit Tigers. The southpaw enjoyed a stellar 2016 Spring Training in Major League camp with the Royals, tossing 7.1 shutout frames over seven appearances, adding eight punchouts and only one walk.

Flynn pitched in only one game for the Storm Chasers last season before being forced to miss the remainder of the year due to a torn lat muscle. The 2013 Pacific Coast League Post-Season All-Star was acquired by Kansas City from the Miami Marlins on November 28, 2014 in exchange for right-hander Aaron Crow.

The 25-year-old has appeared in the Big Leagues in parts of two seasons with the Marlins in 2013-14, totaling an 0-3 mark and 8.64 ERA (24 ER/25.0 IP) in six outings (five starts). In five Spring Training appearances with Kansas City this year, the southpaw owned a 1-1 record and 12.00 ERA (8 ER/6.0 IP), adding four strikeouts.

Calixte played in 107 contests with Omaha last year, posting a .229 average (81-354) along with 38 runs, 11 doubles, two triples, eight homers and 27 RBI. He was recalled by the Royals on April 18 last year and made his Major League debut with Kansas City the very next day against the Oakland Athletics, ultimately recording no hits in three at bats during his two-game stint with the Royals, though he did score a run.

The infielder was re-signed by Kansas City during the offseason as a minor league free agent after the 24-year-old elected free agency. Calixte participated in 13 games with the Royals in Spring Training this year, compiling a .294 average (5-17) with five runs, one triple and three RBI.

Coleman also spent the majority of the 2015 campaign with the Storm Chasers, recording a .275 clip (69-251), adding 31 runs, 11 doubles, two triples, seven homers and 27 RBI in 73 contests. The 28-year-old also made his Major League debut with the Royals last season on July 3 versus the Minnesota Twins and played in a total of four games for Kansas City.

The South Dakota native was re-signed by the Royals as a minor league free agent this past offseason, and was originally selected by Oakland in the 28th round of the 2008 MLB Draft out of Wichita State. In his 13 Spring Training contests with Kansas City, Coleman tallied three hits, all of which were extra-base hits, in 17 at bats, adding three runs, one homer and three RBI.

Morin tallied two hits in nine at bats in Spring Training with the Royals along with two runs scored, a longball and an RBI. The backstop played in 56 games for Double-A Northwest Arkansas last season, accruing a .309 average (55-178), adding 23 runs, ten doubles, five triples, four homers and 30 RBI for the Naturals to help lead the club to a Texas League Championship Series appearance.

The 24-year-old played in one game with the Storm Chasers during the 2014 campaign, going hitless in three at bats. Morin was selected by Kansas City in the 14th round of the 2012 MLB Draft out of the University of Utah.

Following the Royals' moves, 37 players remain in Major League camp, including nine non-roster invitees. The Storm Chasers' 2016 initial roster will likely not be finalized for another two weeks.

Omaha returns to Werner Park for Opening Night 2016 on Thursday, April 7. Single-game tickets are now on sale and can be purchased online by clicking here, or by calling the Werner Park Ticket Office at (402) 738-5100.
