Mavs & Huskers Set To Face Off On April 6
The first of three games at Werner Park featuring the University of Nebraska-Omaha baseball team is scheduled for Wednesday, April 6. The first matchup features the Mavericks squaring off with in-state rival University of Nebraska-Lincoln. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m., and tickets are available online by clicking here.
UNO enters play on Tuesday with a 14-10 record, including a solid 5-1 mark in conference play thus far. The Mavericks have also been hot as of late having won five of their last six contests and also boast a victory over the Iowa Hawkeyes during the Perfect Game Spring Swing Tournament in Georgia earlier this month.
Infielder Clayton Taylor paces the Mavericks offense in most statistical categories, including home runs (seven), RBI (41), total bases (63), slugging percentage (.708) and walks (17), in addition to second on the team with a .393 batting average (35-89). Both Taylor and outfielder Cole Gruber, who leads UNO with a .427 batting average (41-96), have recorded more walks than strikeouts. Freshman infielder and Papillion-La Vista High School alum Jack Kalina will also return to Werner Park after participating in the 2015 Triple-A Home Run Derby powered by OPPD.
Nebraska, meanwhile, touts a 16-7 overall record in 2016 entering play on Tuesday, along with a perfect 3-0 clip versus Big Ten competition. The Cornhuskers currently ride a seven-game winning streak and have also been victorious in 13 of their past 14 contests dating back to March 8.
Huskers infielder Ben Miller enters Tuesday with a .385 average (37-96), adding 16 runs, seven doubles, five homers and 18 RBI as part of a balanced Nebraska offensive attack, and ranks first on the squad in batting average and hits. The Cornhuskers also boast a stellar bullpen anchored by Chad Luensmann and Reece Eddins, who have combined to yield just three earned runs over 39.1 frames, adding 23 punchouts.
This year marks the third consecutive season the two teams have faced off at Werner Park. Nebraska defeated UNO 3-2 last season in a hard-fought ten-inning affair in front of over 4,000 fans. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m., with gates opening one hour prior to the start time.
The Mavericks will also take on Kansas State for the second straight season at Werner Park on Wednesday, April 20, in addition to the Air Force Academy on Tuesday, April 26. The faceoff with Kansas State is set for a 6:35 p.m. first pitch time, while the contest against Air Force is slated for a 1:00 p.m. first pitch time.
