Rosters Revealed for Brewers vs. Shuckers exhibition contest
BILOXI, MS - The Milwaukee Brewers have revealed the rosters for tomorrow's highly anticipated exhibition game between the Shuckers and Brewers at MGM Park. The Shuckers will be led by 18 returning members of last season's South Division Champion club. First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 pm, with gates opening at 11:00 am. The Starting Pitchers:
Starting the game on the mound for the Shuckers will be 22-year-old RHP Jorge Ortega. The native of Caracas, Venezuela tossed 3.2 innings of one-run baseball for the Shuckers in relief during game five of the Southern League Championship Series at Chattanooga last season. While with Advanced Class-A Brevard County in 2015, he earned the Florida State League ERA title with a 2.41 mark (141.2ip, 38er) and led the league in complete games (6), shutouts (2), lowest walks per 9 IP ratio (0.68) and fewest baserunners per 9 IP (9.43), was tied for the league lead with a 1.04 WHIP and ranked among the league leaders in innings (T4th, 141.2) and batting average against (4th, .246). Ortega was named both a FSL midseason and postseason All-Star in 2015.
RHP Chase Anderson will get the nod for the Brewers on the mound tomorrow. In five starts this spring for the Brewers, Anderson is 1-1 with a 9.82 ERA, allowing 16 earned runs in 14.1 innings, striking out eight and walking four. The 28-year-old from McKinney, TX was traded to Milwaukee, along with INF Aaron Hill, SS Isan Diaz and cash, in exchange for SS Jean Segura and former Shucker RHP Tyler Wagner on January 30. Anderson went 6-6 with a 4.30 ERA in 27 starts with Arizona last season with 13 quality starts. Anderson's high-mark in 2015 was when he tossed 6.1 no-hit innings on June 12 at San Francisco before surrendering an infield single to Buster Posey. He earned a 1-0 win over Madison Bumgarner. Over 48 MLB starts over the past two seasons, Anderson boasts a 15-13 record with a 4.18 ERA. Anderson was a Southern League All-Star for the Mobile BayBears in 2012, going 5-4 with a 2.86 ERA in 21 starts.
The Shuckers Roster:
The Shuckers will tout a 27-man roster on Saturday, featuring 19 returnees from 2015. Returning pitchers include LHP Jed Bradley, RHP Jaye Chapman, RHP Drew Gagnon, LHP Josh Hader, RHP Adrian Houser, LHP Hobbs Johnson, RHP Jorge Ortega and RHP Martin Viramontes. Newcomers to the pitching staff are RHP Tristan Archer, LHP Steve Peterson, RHP Javi Salas, RHP Daniel Tillman and LHP Wei-Chung Wang.
Returning position players include C Parker Berberet, INF Garrett Cooper, INF Brandon Macias, INF Nathan Orf, OF Brett Phillips, INF Nick Ramirez, OF Victor Roache, INF Nick Shaw, OF Tyrone Taylor and OF Kyle Wren.
The Shuckers are led by first-year manager Mike Guerrero (18th year as a coach, 3rd in AA). The hitting coach is Sandy Guerrero (14th season, 11th in AA) and pitching coach is Chris Hook (9th season, 5th in AA).
The Brewers Roster:
The Brewers opened Cactus League play with 57 players in Major League camp. Of those, 39 remain a part of camp. The Brewers traveling roster includes pitchers RHP Michael Blazek, RHP Blaine Boyer, LHP Chris Capuano, RHP Tyler Cravy, RHP Matt Garza, RHP Jeremy Jeffress, RHP Taylor Jungmann, RHP Corey Knebel, RHP Jimmy Nelson, RHP Ariel Peña, RHP Wily Peralta and RHP Tyler Thornburg.
Position players include C Jonathan Lucroy, C Martin Maldonado , INF Chris Carter, INF Scooter Gennett, INF Aaron Hill, former Shucker INF Yadiel Rivera, INF Jonathan Villar, INF/OF Colin Walsh, OF Ryan Braun, OF Keon Broxton, OF Ramon Flores, OF Kirk Nieuwenhuis, OF Alex Presley, OF Domingo Santana.
The Brewers are led by second-year manager Craig Counsell. Returning from the 2015 coaching staff is hitting coach Darnell Coles (2nd season), third base coach Ed Sedar (10th season, 6th as 3B coach) and bullpen coach Lee Tunnell (4th season).....new to the staff are pitching coach Derek Johnson, coach Jason Lane, bench coach Pat Murphy and 2015 Shuckers Manager, now first base/infield coach Carlos Subero.
The Brewers are 14-14-2 in the preseason and will open the regular season on Monday at Miller Park, against the San Francisco Giants. The Shuckers will play another exhibition game on Monday, against Jackson State University at MGM Park. First pitch is slated for 6:40 pm.
