Former ICub McGehee Sizzles in Mexico

Thirdbaseman Tops Cubs' Prospects in Winter
February 5, 2007
Casey McGehee enjoyed an impressive Winter League season, topping all Cubs prospects in nearly every offensive category. The 24-year-old third baseman batted .300 and led Chicago farmhands in hits (74), doubles (10), homers (seven), RBIs (36), runs (35), walks (27) and games (67) while in the Mexican Pacific League. After going 1-for-10 in his first three games for the Tomateros de Culiacan, McGehee went on a 16-game hitting streak from Oct. 14 to Nov. 2. But he saved his best performance for Nov. 16, when he went 5-for-5.

In the playoffs, the California native batted .255 (12-for-47) with four RBIs and six runs scored in 14 games.

McGehee was one of many Cubs prospects honing their skills in the various Winter Leagues. Here's how the rest fared:

Fortunately, Aragua made the playoffs and Cedeno's bat started to heat up. C Henry Blanco -- Blanco joined the Leones del Caracas in early October and caught 54 games during the regular season -- 20 fewer than he did during the 2006 season with the Cubs. The 35-year-old batted .204 with three homers and 17 runs scored.
