Bulls Score On Wild Pitch To Take 3-2 Win

Durham pitchers extend hot start on the mound with 12 strikeouts

DURHAM, NC - The Durham Bulls scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a 3-2 win over the Charlotte Knights on Saturday at the DBAP.

Richie Shaffer led off the eighth with a single and Kyle Roller walked before Nick Franklin came in to pinch run for him. Daniel Robertson doubled to score Shaffer and tie the game at 2-2. Franklin came in to score on a two-out wild pitch from third to make it 3-2 going into the ninth.

Eddie Gamboa (1-0) earned the win for Durham (2-1) with 3 2/3 innings in relief, allowing two walks, no hits and striking out three. Mark Sappington got his first save of the season with two strikeouts and a walk in the ninth.

Phillippe Aumont (0-1) took the loss for Charlotte (1-2) with one inning in relief for the Knights. Hector Sanchez and Jacob May hit a home run apiece for Charlotte.

Robertson finished 1 for 4 with an RBI, and Shaffer went 2 for 2 with an RBI and two walks. Dayron Varona had his first Triple-A hit for the Bulls, going 1 for 4 with a double, and Mikie Mahtook led off the game with a triple.

Durham starting pitcher Jaime Schultz went 4 1/3 innings with seven strikeouts. He also allowed the two solo homers for his two earned runs, one walk and five hits. The Bulls pitching staff has now tallied 37 strikeouts on the season, after leading the International League in strikeouts for the past four seasons.
