Storm survive late rally, notch series win

'Pen continues scoreless streak, bats get just enough in 3-2 victory
April 13, 2016

ADELANTO, CA - Much has been made about the hitter-friendly conditions at Mavericks Stadium, but the Lake Elsinore Storm bullpen seems to have momentarily missed that memo. The relief corps for the San Diego Padres affiliate impressed yet again, protecting a one-run lead over the final four frames to secure a 3-2 Storm win over the High Desert Mavericks.

The Mavs jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Lead-off man Travis Demeritte homered off of Dinelson Lamet (W, 1-0), his league-leading fifth home run of the season.

Lake Elsinore responded with two runs of their own in the second. Franmil Reyes singled to begin the inning, followed by Edwin Moreno's second home run in as many days to make it 2-1.

Lamet would allow another solo home run in the second to tie the game 2-2, but the #13 overall Padres prospect hunkered down and hung zeroes for the rest of his start. Lamet would go five innings, allowing just two hits while walking two and striking out three to earn his first-career California League win.

For his part, Mavericks starter Luis Ortiz (L, 1-1) pitched well until the fifth. The righty gave up a lead-off single to Nick Schulz before Trae Santos doubled to put runners on second and third with no outs. Miguel Del Castillo drove in the eventual game-winning run with an RBI single to centerfield that put The Eyes up 3-2.

Lamet gave way to Trevor Seidenberger in the sixth. The former Milwaukee Brewers prospect pitched a perfect inning before trouble found him in the seventh. Seidenberger walked the first batter, gave up a single to the next hitter then walked the third man he faced to load the bases. A smart defensive play by shortstop Javier Guerra eliminated the lead runner at home on a ground ball, and Lake Elsinore would then go to the bullpen in favor of T.J. Weir. The Ball State alum struck out the last two hitters of the inning to leave them loaded and keep the Storm up by a run.

Yimmi Brasoban (S, 2) worked a scoreless eighth, but the Mavs managed to put the tying run at third and the winning run at second in the ninth after a two-out error was followed by a single. The hard-throwing right-hander managed to retire the next hitter to escape the inning and seal the victory.

With the win, Lake Elsinore (5-1) claims sole possession of first place in the California League South via their fourth-straight win, thanks in part to 11.2 consecutive scoreless innings by the Storm 'pen. High Desert - who was undefeated prior to the start of this series - falls to 4-2.

The final match-up of this three-game set is slated for Wednesday evening in Adelanto. LHP Thomas Dorminy (0-1, 6.75 ERA) gets the ball for the Storm while LHP Yohander Mendez (0-0, 12.00 ERA) will go for the Mavericks. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35pm.
