The "Fresno Tacos" start the season 1-0

Fresno shuts out Salt Lake for the second time this season behind Tommy Shirley
April 19, 2016

The Fresno Grizzlies took the field Tuesday night as their alter-ego, the "Fresno Tacos" for the first time in 2016, the first #TacoTuesday of the season at Chukchansi Park. In their second shutout of the season, Fresno improved to 6-5 on the season (1-0 Tacos) with a 3-0 win in the series opener against the Salt Lake Bees.

Some nifty base running by Fresno busted a scoreless tie in the fourth inning. After a one-out Tyler Heineman walk, he moved to third on a Jon Kemmer single. With each runner at a corner, the Tacos executed a perfect double steal, with Kemmer safe as second before Heineman slid in to score, just beating the throw home.

Danny Worth extended his PCL and club-high hit streak to 10 games in the fifth inning with a one-out single to left. After stealing second, he scored on Colin Moran's RBI single. Moran has hit safely in nine of the 10 games he's played, and his ninth RBI tied him with Worth for second on the club, trailing A.J. Reed's 11.

That was more than enough offense for Tacos starter Tommy Shirley (2-0), who earned the win with six and two-thirds shutout innings. (6 H, 1 BB, 3 K.) Shirley has not allowed a run in either of his starts this season, tossing 11 and two-thirds scoreless to begin 2016.

Fresno added some insurance in the eighth, when Nolan Fontana walked with the bases loaded for the third Tacos run.

Both Fresno shutouts this season have come against Salt Lake, both in Shirley's starts. (Won 6-0 on road 4/13). With a PCL-best 10-3 record, the only team to defeat the Bees this season has been the Grizzlies/Tacos. Zach Nuding took the loss for Salt Lake, (5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 1 K.)

Game two of this four game set to wrap Fresno's opening homestand will be Wednesday at 6:35 p.m. Lefty Tyler Skaggs (0-0, 1.50) will start for the Bees, with RHP Michael Feliz (0-0, 18.90) on the hill as the "Grizzlies" return. Fresno is 3-2 thus far on the homestand.
