Shuckers score late, defeat M-Braves

Ellis gives up just one hit through six innings, lowers ERA to 1.16

PEARL, MS-Chris Ellis held the Biloxi Shuckers to just one hit through six innings but the Shuckers plated two in the ninth to steal a 2-1 victory from the Mississippi Braves at Trustmark Park Saturday evening. Knotted at a game apiece, the series continues Sunday at 1:00 PM.

 

Ellis did not factor in the decision. He walked four and struck out four while holding the Shuckers at bay. Jason Hursh came on to work two scoreless frames before giving way to Mauricio Cabrera (0-3) for the ninth. Cabrera was charged with the loss and the blown save.

 

Mississippi (6-11) scored one run on nine hits. Biloxi (12-4) plated two runs on just three hits. Johan Camargo, Dustin Peterson and Carlos Franco all had two-hit games for the Braves.

 

The M-Braves plated its only run in the sixth. Camargo doubled and Peterson singled to put runners at the corners with one out. Franco then delivered a RBI-single to center field, plating Camargo for the game's first run.

 

With the Braves looking to close out a 1-0 game, Biloxi plated two runs in the ninth to steal a victory. Victor Roache walked and Kyle Wren stepped in as the pinch-runner with one out. Javier Betancourt then tripled to right field to tie the game. A throwing error by the shortstop Ozzie Albies then allowed Betancourt to score on the play, putting Biloxi out front 2-1.

 

Jorge Ortega gave up one earned run on seven hits while striking out two. Jed Bradley (2-0) tossed the eighth and picked up the win. Jaye Chapman (S, 7) picked up the save, tossing the final frame.

 

In game three of this five-game series against the Shuckers, the M-Braves send lefty Sean Newcomb (1-0, 2.40) to the hill. Newcomb will counter Biloxi lefty Josh Hader (0-0, 0.69). First pitch is set for 1:00 PM. Gates open at 12:00 PM.
