Yard Goats Win 9th Consecutive Game
Richmond, VA- The Hartford Yard Goats (18-4) defeated the Richmond Flying Squirrels (8-15) by the score of 5-1 on Saturday night at The Diamond in Richmond, Virginia. Zach Jemiola pitched five scoreless innings to earn his third win of the season and Jan Vaquez ripped a 3-run pinch-hit single in the 8th inning to seal the deal. The win secures the Yard Goats seventh consecutive series win. Hartford's 18-4 record is the best record in professional baseball at any level in Major Leagues or Minor Leagues.
The Yard Goats scored the first run of the game on an RBI double by Raimel Tapia in the third inning scoring Zach Osborne from first base, making it 1-0. Osborne began the inning with a leadoff single, one of two hits in the game.
Jemiola was solid permitting just three hits over five innings and Conner Wade hurled two scoreless in relief for the Yard Goats who had the 1-0 lead in the 8th inning.
Hartford broke the game open in the 8th inning. Pinch hitter Jan Vasquez ripped a 3-run single to right field scoring David Dahl and Pat Valaika and Rosell Herrera come home on an error making it 4-0 Hartford. Dahl cranked his Eastern League leading 8th home run in the top of 9th to give the Yard Goats a 5-0 lead.
Reliever Shane Broyles struck out the side in the bottom of the 8th and fanned the first two batters of the 9th before allowing a 2-out walk. Myles Schroder followed with a run scoring double bringing home Ricky Oropesa to make it 5-1. Broyles then retired Eliezer Zambrano to end the game.
The Yard Goats wrap up their 3-game series in Richmond on Sunday afternoon (12:05 PM) and go for a series sweep. LHP Carlos Hernandez will start for the Yard Goats and RHP Kyle Crick will pitch for the Flying Squirrels. The game will be broadcast live on News Radio 1410 WPOP.
