LeFrenz, Castro Help Threshers Complete Sweep

April 10, 2011

CLEARWATER, Fla. - A five-run seventh inning lifted the Clearwater Threshers (4-0) to a 5-4 victory over the Dunedin Blue Jays (0-4) on Sunday afternoon at Bright House Field. Home runs by Leandro Castro and Kyle LaFrenz helped the Threshers snap a nine-game home losing streak on Sundays and remain perfect on the season.

Heading into the bottom of the seventh, the Blue Jays sent in rehabbing major leaguer Frank Francisco to get his work in and preserve a 4-0 lead. Instead, Cesar Hernandez and Jonathan Singleton worked a pair of base on balls and Castro followed with his second blast of the season.

After a single by Travis Mattair chased Francisco from the game, LaFrenz launched his second career homer to give Clearwater the lead for good. Matt Wright (0-1) was responsible for the final two runs and was charged with the loss.

Before the big inning, the Threshers had only managed two hits off Dunedin starter Asher Wojciechowski, who was solid in his five innings of work.

Ebelin Lugo (1-0) was the beneficiary of the win after working a scoreless seventh inning. He was followed by Justin Ellis, and Derrick Loop worked the ninth for his first save of the year.

Pitcher-turned-hitter Joe Savery continued his hot start with a 2-for-3 performance, maintaining an .800 batting average in four games.

The win snapped a nine-game home losing streak on Sundays as the Threshers managed only two such victories in 2010. The team also improves to a franchise-best 4-0, a night after setting a team record for best start.

The Threshers hit the road for a six-game swing in Daytona and Brevard starting on Monday. The team returns to Bright House Field on April 17 for a six-game homestand against those two same ballclubs. April 17 marks a rare Sunday night game for Clearwater and will be capped off with post-game fireworks.
