Base Hit Bonanza; Tourists Win 16-7

May 7, 2016

ASHEVILLE, NC-- Saturday night the Asheville Tourists pounded out a season-high 22 hits and defeated the Delmarva Shorebirds 16-7 on James "Buster" Douglas night at McCormick Field. The 22-hit performance shattered Asheville's previous season-high of 15. It is the most hits the Tourists have recorded in a single game since they pounded out 22 hits against the Greenville Drive on July 24, 2012.

The Tourists took notes from the former heavyweight champion of the world as they applied pressure to the Shorebirds throughout the game. Asheville scored three runs in the bottom of the first and added three more in the second. Already leading 6-0, Brendan Rodgers connected with a Grand Slam in the third. Delmarva showed some fight with a pair of Home Runs in the fourth, but the Tourists responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half.

Both teams continued to swing the bats but when it was all said and done, Asheville came away with the convincing victory. Brian Mundell capped his 3-for-5 night with an eighth inning Home Run. Rodgers, Mylz Jones, and Sam Hilliard joined Mundell in the three-hit club; while Terry McClure topped them all with a 4-for-6 night.

All nine of Asheville's starters recorded at least one hit and they all reached base at least twice. Jack Wynkoop picked up his third win in as many starts. Wynkoop pitched a season-high seven innings and recorded seven strikeouts in the win.

The homestand continues on Sunday afternoon with a 2:05pm first pitch against the Shorebirds.
