Brett Phillips named Southern League Player of the Week
BILOXI, MS. The Southern League announced today that Biloxi Shuckers' 21-year-old outfielder Brett Phillips has been named its Player of the Week. Phillips batted .269 with seven runs, seven hits, five extra-base hits, 20 total bases, a double, four home runs and eight RBIs over the previous week.
His runs, extra-base hits, total bases and home run totals either led or tied for the league-lead over the last week. Among players with more than 15 at-bats, Phillips also paced the circuit with a .769 slugging percentage and 1.114 OPS. The highlight of the week was when Phillips helped to snap a four-game losing streak by blasting a trio of homeruns at Pensacola on Saturday, one short of the League record, while collecting six RBIs in the contest.
Phillips became the first Southern League player to hit three home runs in a game since Montgomery's Tyler Goeddel hit three on July 30, 2015. Phillips' teammate Victor Roache was the last to do it in the Brewers farm system, accomplishing it on May 4, 2014 while with A+ Brevard County. The six RBIs on Saturday night matched a Shuckers club record as well.
Entering Monday, Phillips ranks T-2nd in the Southern League in home runs (5), and third in RBIs (21). The Seminole, FL native was acquired by Milwaukee, along with Josh Hader, Adrian Houser and Domingo Santana for Mike Fiers and Carlos Gomez on July 30, 2015. Phillips is rated by MLB.com as the Brewers No. 2 overall prospect.
Jackson's Dylan Unsworth was named the Southern League Pitcher of the Week.
