Harrell Drives in Three in Series Opener

The SeaWolves dropped the opening game of a three-game series to the Akron RubberDucks, 12-5, on Monday night at Canal Park.

Akron jumped ahead against Erie starter Lucas Harrell in the top of the first inning. Clint Frazier walked and Yandy Diaz singled putting two on for Bradley Zimmer. Zimmer singled home Frazier for a 1-0 lead. Nellie Rodriguez singled home Diaz for a 2-0 Akron edge. Akron got a third run when Bryson Myles hit into a double play.

Erie got on the board in the second against Akron starter D.J. Brown. John Hicks singled to extend his hitting streak to nine straight games. With two outs, Connor Harrell, in his first at-bat since coming off the disabled list, crushed a two-run home run to left, making it 3-2.

The SeaWolves then tied the game in the top of the third when Jeff McVaney connected on a solo home with one out. The home run for McVaney was his third and second in the last two games.

Akron quickly regained the lead in the last of the third. With a runner on first and two outs, Bryson Myles connected on a two-run home run to left for a 5-3 Ducks lead.

In the last of the fourth with two outs, Joe Sever singled home Eric Stamets making it 6-3 Akron.

Erie got one back in the top of the sixth. Hicks led off with his second of three hits and moved to second on a one out Dominic Ficociello walk. The runners advanced on a wild pitch and Hicks scored on a Harrell groundout making it 6-4.

Akron wasted no time extending its lead in the last of the sixth against reliever Gabe Hemmer. Jeremy Lucas led off with a double. Stamets followed with a single and on the play, Lucas scored on an error making it 7-4. Frazier doubled home Stamets with one out and Zimmer singled home one with two outs for a 9-4 Akron advantage.

Erie made it a 9-5 game in the top of the eighth against reliever Antonio Romero. With two outs, Harrell singled and Eaves walked putting two on for Gustavo Nunez. Nunzez singled home Harrell for Erie's final run of the night.

Akron added three more runs against reliever Paul Voelker in the ninth and made it a 12-5 game.

Harrell (2-1) took the loss for Erie. He allowed a season-high six runs on six hits with four walks and four strikeouts in five innings.

The SeaWolves and Ducks meet in the middle game of the series on Tuesday morning at 10:35 a.m. at Canal Park. LHP Matt Crouse (0-1, 4.26 ERA) takes the mound for Erie against LHP Shawn Morimando (5-0, 1.89 ERA).
