Errors Cost Generals in Loss to Mobile

BayBears take late lead on unearned run to hand Generals defeat
May 18, 2016

Mobile, Ala. - In a game that took almost three hours after a delay of more than two, Jackson fell 5-4 to the Mobile BayBears Tuesday night at Hank Aaron Stadium. Jackson made three errors in the contest, and they've now lost three in a row for only the second time in 2016.

Mobile (17-21) scored the go-ahead run in the eighth thanks in part to a Jackson error. Kevin Medrano led off with a single and moved all the way to third on an errant pickoff attempt by Ryne Harper (1-2, 1.59). With one out, he came home on a sacrifice fly by former General Gabriel Guerrero to go on top 5-4.

Jackson (22-16) nearly extended the game with a rally in the ninth. With two outs, Steve Baron and Benji Gonzalez singled before Ian Miller walked to load the bases. Tim Lopes worked the count, but ultimately struck out swinging against Jimmie Sherfy (S, 3) to end the ballgame.

The Generals also failed to score in the eighth inning despite putting two on with nobody out against Daniel Gibson (2-0, 0.00). Jackson stranded seven in the loss, and failed to score more than four runs for the ninth-straight game.

The start of the contest was delayed two hours and ten minutes because of rain. It finally got underway at 8:45 pm CT, and the Generals jumped out to an early lead. Tim Lopes doubled and moved to third on a line drive off Mobile starter Yoan Lopez, who would be removed from the contest after seven pitches. Tyler O'Neill singled to score Lopes, putting Jackson up 1-0.

Mobile manufactured a run of its own in the first, scoring on a groundout to tie the game. Things fell apart in the second with two outs. With two on, Kevin Medrano reached on an infield single. Gabriel Guerrero scored from second thanks in part to a throwing error by D.J. Peterson, the first of three defensive miscues for the Generals. The BayBears made them pay, adding two more on an Evan Marzilli double to go up 4-1.

D.J. Peterson atoned for his error on defense with a two-run double to left field in the fourth, cutting Mobile's edge to one. Jackson nearly tied the game, but Steve Baron lined into an inning-ending double play.

Jackson would tie the game in the sixth. Guillermo Heredia drew his second walk of the contest and moved to third on a Leon Landry single. Peterson brought home Heredia, driving in his third run with a sacrifice fly to tie the game at four.

Sam Gaviglio turned in a quality start in the loss, allowing four runs (three earned) over six innings while striking out five and not walking a hitter in six innings. After throwing 63 pitches through three, the right-hander needed just 24 pitches over his last three innings.

Zach Shank went 0-for-3, but did reach via walk in the fourth inning. The infielder has reached in 29-straight games, which gives him the longest such streak in the Southern League this year. Tyler O'Neill's 28-gamer had been the gold standard.

Jackson and Mobile wrap up a ten-game season series less than 12 hours after Tuesday's game ended, as the squads are scheduled to square off Wednesday morning at Hank Aaron Stadium. Lefty Ryan Yarbrough (3-1, 3.11) goes for the Generals opposite reigning Southern League Pitcher of the week Edgar Garcia (1-1, 1.13) for Mobile. First pitch is scheduled for 11:05 am CT, and you can catch all the action starting at 10:50 am CT on the TuneIn Radio App.
