Chihuahuas and Whataburger to Host Food Drive

May 20, 2016

EL PASO - May 19, 2016 - The El Paso Chihuahuas and Whataburger are teaming up for the second year to fight hunger in El Paso by hosting a food drive at Southwest University Park. The drive will take place beginning today, Thursday, May 19th through Sunday, May 22nd when the Chihuahuas take on the Round Rock Express (Texas Rangers).

Fans are encouraged to donate non-perishable food items as they enter through the gates of Southwest University Park during the home series. All items will go towards the El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank in an effort to help meet the goal of 1,600 meal donations during the drive.

"Whataburger and the Chihuahuas had a successful drive last year and we are teaming up again to help El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank," said Chihuahuas General Manager Brad Taylor. "This is a great partnership that will help provide meals to families in the El Paso area."

Food collection will take place at the Santa Fe Gate entrance one hour before each game during the series. Fans are asked to donate non-perishable items that include canned vegetables and fruits, soups, high protein items such as tuna and peanut butter, boxed pastas and cereals, and staples such as packaged rice and beans. Fans are also encouraged to make monetary donations.

For every fan that donates three (3) or more canned goods, non-perishable food items, or a minimum monetary contribution of $1, Whataburger will give each donor one (1) coupon good for a free Whataburger, while supplies last.

"Whataburger is proud to partner with the El Paso Chihuahuas to help them meet their fundraising goal of 1,600 meal donations this year," said Whataburger Director of Operations Henry Apodaca. "We believe no one should have to struggle with hunger, and we're glad to do our part to invest in our community."

In addition to the food drive, the Chihuahuas Volunteer Pack presented by Helen of Troy will be volunteering at the El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank headquarters on Saturday, May 21 from 8:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. The Pack, alongside Whataburger representatives, will be assisting with sorting food, cleaning, office work, and other duties as needed at the warehouse.
