South Bend Stuns Lake County with 10-6 Win
EASTLAKE, OH - You can never leave a South Bend Cubs game early. South Bend, who has posted five walk-off wins at Four Winds Field this season, scored three times in the eighth and four times in the ninth to stun Lake County 10-6 to take over sole possession of first place in the Eastern Division.
The Cubs trailed 6-3 after the Captains tallied four runs in the fifth inning off South Bend starting pitcher Ryan Kellogg. The Arizona State product gave up six runs (four earned) over five innings but walked away with a no-decision thanks to the Cubs offense getting the job done late.
Eddy Julio Martinez led off the South Bend eighth inning with a single and went to third on a hit-and-run single by Daniel Spingola. After an infield hit by Jesse Hodges to load the bases, Matt Rose delivered a 2-rbi single to send the Cubs in front 8-6. Ely laid down a safety squeeze bunt to tally Hodges from third base for the third run of the frame. P.J. Higgins fourth hit of the night was an RBI double scoring Bryant Flete to give the Cubs a 10-6 advantage.
Scott Effross (2-0) collected the Cubs win after two scoreless innings while striking out four. Kyle Miller threw two important scoreless frames in the sixth and seventh to give the Cubs offense a chance to come back.
The Cubs, who collected a season high 18 hits, have sole possession of first place in the East for the first time this season. Lake County falls out of first place for the first time in 40 days.
The third game of the four game series is Sunday at 1:30pm on 96.1fm WSBT. Preston Morrison will pitch for South Bend. The TCU product is 2-2 with a 4.31 earned run average.
